A Very Strange Jump

Recommended Posts

>>Yesterday I did a solo H&P from 3k where I exited, deployed, and flew my main completely within a cloud, unitl I came out of it at about 1,200ft. I caught a brief glimpse of the landing area so I knew the spot was okay. What struck me was how quiet it was in free-fall...I couldn't hear the wind like normal, it felt more like I was just floating in a white void. It was also odd having a static frame of reference against which to judge my movement; I could see the could going by slower and slower as my main inflated, until it till it all came to a stop. I looked up to check my canopy, but all I saw were my lines coming down out of the white mist. I knew there was no one else in the sky and my canopy was controllable, so I did S-turns to stay in relatively the right area until I came out of the bottom. I'll never forget the sensation of flying my canopy in the total quiet, surrounded by the white void, feeling for all the world like you were just floating alone in and endless expanse of white nothingness. Then I finally came out of the bottom, and landed a normal pattern. It was so strange to go through an entire jump all the way to canopy flight without ever seeing the earth or the sky. Not quite sure how I feel about it.

I wasnt all that happy about it, of course I made the choice to get out, but I had a slight off heading opening and without any reference it was a little scary not beeing able to see where everybody else was...

I sure was glad it cleared up more for the 2nd and 3rd jump.

Good for you. The last time I deployed in a cloud, it was on a 'normal' skydive, my goggles were fogged over and I spent about 300 feet before I came out waiting for someone to fly (or fall) into me out of the mist. I can't say I was really appreciative of my surroundings...

One of the best "visuals" I ever had was doing a hop & pop right over a little fluffy cloud. Started getting the opening snatch force just as I got to the top of it and could realy see the speed dropping off as I entered the top of the cloud.
Every chance I had after that if I was dropping SL students and had a small cloud near by, I would try to dublicate that visual, never with any success!

Students? That's not a good idea. Besides the fact that it's an FAA violation.

On my 1st 15 second delay I opened just above a cloud and then descended into it - thick white mist all round. I was under a round canopy, and remember vividly losing all sensation of movement - I could not tell which way I was drifting, and for all I knew, I could have been going up! It was very, very quiet, and that made it all the more surreal.

Since then I have enjoyed a few freefalls through cloud, which are awesome - approaching the cloud at terminal, going into it and then rocketing out the bottom - the only thing that detracts from it is the fact that you cannot tell where other jumpers are, so you have to keep your wits about you.

I didn't drop the student in a cloud, I dropped myself in them after letting the studentsout. This some times resulted in a slightly long spot for myself.

And it wasn't in the US so who cares if the FAA don't approve!!!B|
