R&D of human body flight.

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that there is a lot of research and development going on in the area of wing suit and canopy design. I'm sure that a lot of money and time has been spent in the pursuit of performance in these areas as manufacturers can return a profit.

I am interested if any individual or formal body has researched the charactoristics of human flight. This would probably relate to maximising forward speed in a tracking position or atmonauti. Possibly even perfecting body position for FS events. I understand students are taught the standard box and tracking positions as they clearly work. However has anyone ever done any wind tunnel tests like they use for cars. I know they use tunnels to refine skijumpers for the winter olympics. Everyone has to find the position that works best for them but maybe there's an easier way?

The problem you run into is that wind tunnel testing is very very expensive and the money has to come from somewhere. There is no money to be gained by determining the aerodynamics of the human body.

"clean skin" jumps?

Nekkid Wind Tunneling? :o

I'm not even going to comment on what that can do to a guy.....:D:P

Come jump naked in our Wind Tunnel and extend your manhood at the same time!

We'll put you in the tunnel with a tiny parachute strapped to your organ. After 3-5 short session, you'll be the envy of ANY porn star!

Only $69.99 per session.....

Ok, ok...so I have a sick sense of humor....what's your point? :P

No two bodies are alike though.

I assume you could make up an "Average Joe" for experimentation and research. Calculate the weight of the "Average" man for example, and then figure out how that weight is distributed by using Average, General proportions of mass/weight/surface area of each limb etc....

Then you could do all the theoretical math you wanted to to find body positions for max glide, best vertical speed, minimal backslide.... blah blah blah....

You'd come up with the positions we are taught as students though [:/]

Have to bite on this one. I do a lot of naked jumps, not necessarily for the joke value... Tracking is one thing that feels unnatural when you jump naked - but if you practice it, find that position where the air pressure is evently distributed over your body, making subtle changes to arms, legs, hips etc... my tracking improved as a direct result of the practice I put in whilst not wearing a jumpsuit. YMMV.
