Skydiving popularity in mass media

Recommended Posts

I have been interested in skydiving for 6 years, so I noticed everything skydiving related.

Last week I heard an UPS commercial on the radio. The gest is, a skydiving helmet manufacture owner talks about his shipping manager not willing to take risks, and therefore he uses UPS… Then you hear him jumping from the airplane, completely fake Doppler effect as he jumps and yells something… Regardless, it is a skydiving themed commercial for UPS – a HUGE company.

Today I saw a commercial where a guy jumps from an otter… Then the camera cuts to a guy who says, “I can’t do it” as he chickens out… Then the instructor says, “how about for a Bud Light” as he chucks a case out the door… The pilot, without a bailout rig, jumps after the beer, leaving the plane pilot less. Another skydiving themed commercial for a HUGE company…

Is it me, or have the mass media chosen our sport recently?

I wonder if tandeming has gotten more pervasive over the last 6 years. I know the 2 small little DZs I used to jump in Indiana back in 2000 didn't do tandeming, but they do now.

Skydiving is such an easy sport to try out. DZs are everywhere and it only takes about 15 mins "training" to be cargo for a TM. Plus you can get the photos and video to prove you did it.
