Who is the "Warren Miller" of Skydiving?

Recommended Posts

I don't like Warren Miller. His voice-overs seem stuck in the 1960s . . .

I'm old and he was old when I first saw his stuff, and I find his humor corny. I'll bet if his voice-overs were about skydiving you wouldn't like it much either. I mean, how much, "hey, watch this guy fall down," can you take.

I've always had the impression Warren Miller doesn't so much promote the thing he's shooting, but rather goes out of his way to make fun of it.

The photography is sometimes okay, but I'm pretty sure Warren is kicking back in the ski lodge while his younger assistants are doing the shooting.

That being said it; the sad part is it would take someone like Warren Miller to make endless jumping footage palatable to general audiences. And I believe all the skydiving camera people mentioned up-board care about the sport too much to present it in Warren Miller fashion.

Good humor is about laughing at it and being awed by it, at the same time. WM does that nicely with skiing and avoids the self important pretension of the typical director/producer. Our top notch camera guys certainly care enough about the sport to present it in both inspiring and humorous ways and I'm glad they aren't so stuck up about it as you think is needed

joe g, relative work also called RW, is mostly used to describe formation skydiving. it basicly means skydivers staying relative to one another on they're bellys and accomplishing a set goal. usualy turning points. VRW= verticle relative work, this referes to freeflying. in freeflying we dont usually use the term "turing points" but instead refer to +taking docks" which results in a point during competition or training jumps

point taken, and agreed--but reading between the lines of the question was where I got the question that I answered.

Thankfully, Warren Miller is DONE with his cheesy voice over work. I'm pretty sure that the only reason he stuck around so long in the first place was tradition, anyhow.

I disagree though about WM making our sports palatable to the general populace--I think it just needs to be done a bit more creatively. That being said, that's not always so easy to do in the film industry, unless you happen to be independantly wealthy and willing to take a huge loss on your jumping film...

someday it will happen the RIGHT way, though...

I do agree with you about his voice overs. But if you are an avid skier or snowboarder - about november the new warren miller film comes out, and everyone gets together to drink and laugh and have a swapmeet and watch the new WM film.

Plus, his films are now often on OLN (outdoor life network) and it is good exposure to the non skiing public.

Skiing and snowboarding are growing sports, and, although I know skydiving is much more dangerous than land based sports, everything I read says that the numbers of active participants are shrinking.

I just would have thought that someone would be getting footage out there for the public at large, even if it weren't done in the corny WM fashion.

And although WM is VERY old now and doesn't shoot most of the footage on his video anymore, for years and years he did it successfully all by himself.

More than anything my question was not about someone specifically like WM, but someone who is successfully getting good footage with a voice over that will explain what is being shown to those who dont have any idea what the moves or styles are, AND getting them excited about it at the same time.
