Google helps make skydiving away from home safer!

Recommended Posts

Going to go jump somewhere far from home?

Now, with google's new satelite images added to maps.google.com, just type in the name or address of where you are going, and check out the landing area ahead of time!

It's still a good idea to walk the landing area.

I've jumped at Cross Keys for big way events, and that landing area tends to get tight with all those canopies landing at the same time. A few times I've gone over to the other side by the runway to keep my self safe.
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. - Edward Abbey

Works awesome for Perris!

But the images are old...the tunnel isn't there!

Eloy looks fairly recent ... swoop ponds, and a hole in the ground for the tunnel so its less than i year old i'd guess...

empty parking lot... must have been a slow weekday.. would be funny to see canopies on a shot or two...

these maps have long been available, but usually not at the resolution or the image size that Google is providing. I was stitching together 6-8 smaller images to get 900x900 pixels. Only downside here is the google watermarking.

Some are definitely better than others. Monterey Bay is lousy. Elsinore is one of the sharpest.

we've had this in the uk for a while, but with ariel photos of the entire UK. got a cool feature as well, when you move your mouse over the ariel photo it shows an overlay of the street map so it's easier to pick out features when not zoomed in

that is my home dz

multimap.com looks cool! it doesn't look like it's ready for the states yet tho. it's way better than globexplorer.com, which is what i used to get an ariel of my dz.
multimap looks more detailed/better quality.. plus your zoom is better. globexplorer puts a giant watermark over their maps if your not a subscriber (see attached) but it lets search lat/long cords as well as addresses.
::shrug:: i'll have to remember that link in case they expand to the states- thanks!
i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

that's the only thing about multimap, as it's done by ariel photos it's quite a long job to fly a plane over every inch of the country, so it's only for the UK at the mo. and they can provide higher quality pictures if you ask for them, you have to pay though. still it's a pretty good system
