Skydiving after a head injury???

Recommended Posts

Hi,
About a month ago I was in an accident (not skydiving related), I had a concussion. Although I planned to jump this winter, for obvious reasons those plans will not be implemented. However I am wondering if by the time the summer comes and I will feel fine would it be safe for me to jump?! My main concern is the opening.

Thank you.

Yes of course, although I think a doctor will have a difficult time understanding the reason for my concern (if that guy is crazy enough to jump of a perfectly good plane, i cant help him ;)). I was actually hoping to get some feedback from skydivers who experienced the same sitauation.

May not be the same, but back in the day I had a head injury, a skull fracture with brusing and blood clot in the brain... I've been fine ;)

edited to add that CLEARLY I am NOT A DOCTOR.. So listening to me would DEFINATELY NOT BE THE RIGHT ANSWER :P I just know my own medical history and my own lack of long term problems.

I will reiterate and emphasize Chuck's point about seeing a doctor. Take him a video of the type of skydive you will make, especially the opening (since that's what you're concerned about). Ask your DZO if there are any doctors that skydive there; they can help you get the information you need.

You can also call the USPA and ask for some help with that. They were very helpful when I asked around for some info regarding medical qualifications and jumping.

I spoke with the ever knowledgable Mr. Peek, who put me in touch with a Dr. in my general area who spoke with my doctor and through that I was able to get my 'clearances'.

Best of luck,

Better yet, find a skydiving doctor and ask them.

My Optometrist told me I would need to give up jumping beacuse it was fucking my eyes up. I found a skydiving Optometrist who told me it was nothing to do with jumping and was all the 'puter stuff I do.

Sorry, all the computer work in the world won't fuck your eyes up. Prescriptions are based on the size/shape of your eye, so unless you are physically smashing your eyeball against the monitor repeatedly, it won't do a thing to you. Using your eyes for any visual activity (sitting too close to the TV, reading in the dark, crossing them intentionally, etc.) can not harm them. Killing kittens won't hurt them either.

I believe asking your doctor if you can jump after a head injury is a waste of time. Most doctors are going to say no because, like most people, they don’t understand the sport. I’m sure some doctors would think you must have a head injury if you want to jump out of a plane. I would suggest that you ask your doctor if it would be ok for you to go skiing or ride a roller coaster.

This is not really the wisest move in the world, hiding the truth from the doc. It's a head injury, it's a brain we are talking about here. Damage to it can completely alter a person's world permanently. Don't play games with that!!

Considering how many docs jump at my DZ, it is BS to globalize that docs think you are crazy for jumping. Always ask first, if the doc blows you off or calls you crazy for jumping at all, then it is time to get a second opinion from someone who does respect your chosen activities.

That's not always true. My doctor had every reason in the world to tell me 'no'. But he didn't and even signed a letter saying so.

He'll never jump though, already tried that ;)

peregrinerose ,nate_1979: how long after the injury were u able to start skydiving again...? To be clear: I understand that every case is unique. I have turned for medical advice about my situation in the past and I am planning to seek even more medical advices before I will get back into the sport. I am asking out of pure curiosity. Thank you.

Eugene.

This will depend on whether there is any traumatic brain injury or post-concussional syndrome. If neither then there should be no problem at all. The opening shouldn't present any problems either. But please be sure to ask your doctor before you decide. I guess the main concerns would be if you have any kind of brain injury or lesion that is not properly healed then it could be exacerbated by jumping. If you just had a bang on the head and had concussion or loss of consciousness, and there have been no other consequences then I guess you will be okay.
