schuey 0 #1 April 11, 2005 I did a search and saw a topic about whether skydiving goggles were ok for skiing... but none for whether skiing goggles were ok for skydiving. I haven't made any jumps, but taking my fjc in about a month or so. I was just wondering whether I'd be ok using one of my pairs of skiing goggles... or not? Forgive me if it was a bit of a silly question. Cheers. EDIT: PS I wear contacts.
DShiznit 0 #2 April 11, 2005 Ski goggles probably aren't good wind protection for the angles/speed at which you are falling, and will be quite bulky. Also, you will be supplied goggles for training, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Tink1717 2 #3 April 11, 2005 If you wear contacts, I would recommend using goggles by Sport RX. Specifically the G-101 model. Check here: http://www.sportrx.com/default.asp They are a little pricey ($30.00), but they work better than any others I've tried. (Now that I've had my eyes lasered, I still wear them. Very comfy) Good luck.Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink. (I never heard of you either!!) gemini 0 #4 April 11, 2005 Depending on where you are re: temperature the ski googles could be very uncomfortable since they are made to retain warmth even though they are ventilated. Blue skies, Jim
mattjw916 2 #5 April 11, 2005 I wear contacts and use "Flex-Z" goggles... only $17 and they last for more than a season, are easy to clean, won't get scratched easily, don't come off in free fall, and if you lose them you won't care, just buy another pair. I have never had a problem with them. You can find them and more here: https://www.square1.com/Catalog/NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
skycat 0 #6 April 11, 2005 Hooknswoop used ski goggles for doing tandems in the winter here in CO. I'm not sure where you are from since your profile isn't filled out, but unless there is snow on the ground I have a feeling that they will be to warm. Like someone else said the dropzone will provide goggles for you just be sure to tell them that you wear contacts. edit to add... I 2nd Flex-Zs they are the only ones that fit my small face. Just don't leave them in your car when it is over 100 degrees....they will melt. Fly it like you stole it!
dayle 0 #7 April 11, 2005 I used ski goggles once...... Unless you keep your face directly into the relative wind, they will come off at freefall speeds. It was January 1st, I was jumping from the Cessna, stuck my head out to check the spot and the googles were pulled away from my face. I exited, pulled them back on and kept face down, no more problems. It was -20 C. which is why I decided to try them, but IMHO you'd be better off with just a regular pair of googles. KindredSpirit 0 #8 April 11, 2005 I have ski goggles and I've used them a couple times. They stayed on and were not too warm at all. There is ONE problem actually...The size of the goggle frame blocks my view downward so it makes it hard to see my reserve handle. I'm going to switch to something with a smaller frame. JohnnyZ 0 #9 April 13, 2005 Low profile is key. The goggles or glasses need to be as close to the face as possible or they will likely catch wind. I'm a repeat customer of Sport Rx. I started with the G103 (goggle), then bought a pair of Bolle Boomslangs, and just got a pair of Bolle Spirals, all of which were ordered with perscription lenses. The G103's were ok, but eventually the foam padding will peal away from the goggles and you'll have to screw around with super glue to fix it (which never turns out quite right for me). Both pair of Bolle's are awesome. I still have my first pair (now 2 years old) and wear them almost daily. I just bought a new pair for the hell of it. If your going with perscription lenses, I strongly recommend getting sunglasses over the goggles. They hold up great and you can wear them all the time. Hope this helps... John Z. dropoutdave 0 #10 April 13, 2005 I've just ordered a pair of these, they look good for the money. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=21249&item=7116601588&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V I wear contacts too so i'll be doing the strap up extra tight. A few people have mentioned that they might have a too high a profile and might flip up. Will get back to you when I check em out. ------------------------------------------------------ May Contain Nut traces......
cocheese 0 #11 April 14, 2005 I wear contacts and use SORZ.$20 in the gear store. They work good, feel good and keep my contacts in at 200mph if I tighten the strap good. Too tight isn't comfortable.Have lost contacts with ALL goggles. Usually during break off or high speed flips.Lose one every 50 jumps or so.Sucks landing with one eye working and one not. No swoop this time.SORZ leave racoon marks after 50 jumps or when it's really hot.
