Dougiefresh 0 #1 April 16, 2005 Just had my first mal... managed to misroute the bridle and pack myself a PC in tow. Guess I should have practiced packing over the winter. I pulled at 4 and realized there was a problem within about 2 seconds -- when you don't feel the bag lift off your back, there's a problem. EPs were automatic and I was pretty calm. Went for red, got it first try. Went for silver, had to try twice cuz it was up in my armpit, but I was under a beautiful white canopy by 2.5k. Stood up the landing and found the freebag about 30 min later. It was my second jump of the season, so I managed to get a grand total of 1 jump between reserve repacks. Morals of the story: 1. stay current on both jumping and packing. 2. Don't let people rush or distract you during your packing, and 3. know your EPs. I did one of the three, and luckily it was enough.Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams

ixlr82 7 #3 April 16, 2005 Question 1: Did you land with the main still in the pack tray? If so... Question 2: Why would your reserve handle be up by your armpit when you are falling belly to earth (yes?) with nothing out but the pc? (serious questions-not implying anything) __________________________________________
cocheese 0 #4 April 17, 2005 I did that once when I was a newbie. Was worried that the closing loop was loose so i tightened it up and hurried to the plane.... with a PC in tow just waiting for me. Got a pin check before exit too, but mis-route wasn't noticed. Pulled at 4000 and said "this isn't a slow opening". Tugged on the bridle 3 times and went straight to silver. Poof Ahhhh. Learned how to pack after that.Cheers ! Now don't do that again. I know you won't.
Dougiefresh 0 #5 April 17, 2005 Quote Now don't do that again. I know you won't. Fuckin' A. It was one of those hard expensive scary lessons... the kind you do ONCE and never forget. ixlr82: I was only b-to-e from 4.5 to 4k. I was practicing my sit cartwheels and stand heading control on this jump. I did land with the main still in the tray. I don't know why it seemed like my handle was higher than usual, but then again, I've never reached for it in freefall before.Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
