Side door or tailgate?

What's this painted red line stuff?

In most tailgate planes, there is a line where you cant have more then x skydivers behind it. Its to limit the weight in the rear section of the plane to avoid stalls.

Typically, it 8 to 10 jumpers max depending on the plane.

Has this actually occurred?? :o

I would have imagined that the airplane would still have some momentum to get it at least a little bit ahead of the jumpers... I fly and I understand stalls, but I have not heard of any that actually caused a plane to do a sort of retrograde slide... However, one thing I can imagine would be a spin, not just a stall, which might send the airplane into its stall/spin recovery back toward, or under, or on top of the jumpers.

I don't fly Skyvans (I should be so blessed) but I would think there's no guarantee that the stall will not break to one side or the other, causing this sort of situation.

It happened at Skydive Chicago years ago. Somebody who's been around longer than I can tell the story. Roger Nelson was the pilot, and he used to love telling the story.

I don't think it's actually killed anyone.

Never came close to plowing into jumpers :S When it happened at a midwest boogie years ago out of the Casa the jumpers even managed to make some of a formation. The plane would have to do a retroslide at well into 75 knots to catch back up to the jumpers that were tossed out the door.
