AFF + A liscense Back to Back. Good or Not so Good?

Recommended Posts

I posted this in the greetings section and didnt get any feedback so i changed it up a little to sound like what it was ment to sound like and stuck it here to see if anyone thought one way or the other.

does any feel that taking the AFF and the class A liscense training back to back in the same week is too much for a newb? Its hard for me to get time off at work and I am trying to work a deal so i can take one whole week off at work. Do u think it would be hard to get through both courses at the DZ in 5-7 days? At the DZ they said they have had people finish both in 5 days. I plan on staying in the bunkroom at the DZ so I can maxamize my time. I have also been told that if i can afford to takeit all at once then it is the best way to go. Just lookng for more input. I have been looking over the Skydivers Instruction Manual for 2005. I think i could do it. I catch on to technical stuff fast! Thanks for the input!

weather, weather, weather... That is the key!

You need 25 jumps for an A, right.... At a DZ with a great staff and many planes, you should be able to get 6 jumps in a day (that is what our 4-way team does every training day, and we are stepping it up next week to more)... The first day, I bet 3 jumps (AFF1-3) would be all you want to do... Maybe AFF4-7 the next day... That leaves 3 days * 6 jumps... Ground School...

So, the key is to talk to the DZ and get it all scheduled for each day, making sure you have a coach arranged for full days... If they say you can do it, you can. If they say not, then don't ask us...:P

I believe it from my newbie experience that... In the beginning, the number of days hanging around the DZ interacting with different people, talking to packers, talking to TI, talking to experienced jumpers, is just as important as jump numbers, for your education... I.E. when the weather sucks showing up at the DZ is still a good thing... Thus, your "A" training in a week with no down time may be not as good as if you took longer to complete it from a tech/gear/procedure perspective, but I bet you will be a better flyer because the coach will have no "downtime" to reteach... But the simple fix is to hang out as much as you can and keep learning once you are done with "boot camp week"...

Anyone else with more jumps than I, perhaps instructors, think he can do it????

Currency is always good, and if you can pul it off, you certainly won't be the worse for it. However, if you blow ALL your money doing this and can't jump for a long time (4-6 weeks) due to lack of funds, I'd say you'd be better off spacing your training out over a month, rather than a week. JMHO

The cool thing about doing it all at once is that you don't "forget" what you learned and have to start all over. . .the bad is that if you fail an AFF level it could affect your brain a little bit and make it difficult to get going again. . .I love being able to just jump and jump and jump but remember that skydiving is physical and it will take more out of you than you realize. You can plan on trying to do it but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't happen. . .

thanks for the advise and input everyone! I know its demanding. I will be rested and ready to go each day. and after i finish it may be the next weekend b4 i can jump, but i dont see it being more than 1 week b4 i get to jump again. for now i will keep my nose crammed into this Manual and absorb all the info so when i go in i will already have he technical knowledge. its all about doing after that. it should make it easier to focus on my training rather then trying to remember all the technical information. as far as funds go thats why i have to wait till the end of July or Early August. :( but hey its a savings goal now!

I tell anyone who ask me about training to take a weeks vacation and go thru their training and A license in one shot if possible. Then I stress that they need commit to maintaining a high level of currency with atleast one day per month dedicated to skydiving/multiple jumps.
I also tell'em up front that they can with student training, coaching/follow-up training, 1st 100 jumps and buying gear, easily plan on spending $5000 - $7500 their first year in sport.

Depends on you, in addition to the weather. Pre-A, 3 jumps was a big day for me. Most of the time it was 2. By then I was jacked up enough that I was content to call it a day. At this point, I like 4-5...by the 6th I'm a bit drained and I'm not getting the same level of performance.

So if you dedicate 5 days to it, don't over pressure yourself to get 25 done in that time frame.

A warning from another newbie....

While waiting to begin.... Go to the gym, or rollerblade, or cycle, or jog, or whatever.... GET YOURSELF INTO SHAPE IMMEDIATELY!!

You're gonna be wearing a 25 pound backpack for many hours a day.

I'm aching after doing 9 jumps in one day. ;) (12 jumps in one weekend)
I'm now on a once-every-two-weeks habit now, which should allow me to reach my 100 jump goal by October.

I can't agree more. I fell victim to multiple wind/rain/cloudy days and it took me 3 months to get through AFF with a setback on L6. I personally found that getting there early and chattin' with the vets was worth way more than the jump experience itself. As for the multiple jumps per day during AFF, depending on your age, health, and stamina, all you can do is try.

I took it day by day and so far it is working for me.

best advice yet in my opinion... stretching makes such a difference the next day. i'm still working on staying hydrated without shedding gear 50x a day (i exaggerate.. a lot).:D

why the rush though? make sure you get all your questions answered... sometimes being in a hurry can suck. i ask, and ask and ask.. and reading dz.com only sparks more q's. i've decided to limit myself to 2-3 jumps/day for a few reasons. mainly budget. i just want to make sure i fully understand everything.

but yeah, if you have great weather and the bank account to do it in a week or two.. go for it! i've seen several fly through the course. it's doable... i just needed a little more help- goodluck:)
p.s. last year, when i still had my second job-- i'd go on weekdays. they have tons of time to spend with you then -- i'm pretty sure dallas flies on weekdays too.
weekdays rock, but make sure you're job is reaaally reaaaalllyy flexible.... as in, take off all day;) (note: i lost job numero dos:S --- i emphasize "reeeeeeeaaaaaaallyyyyy flexible")
i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

nice to know that as long as i get good weather its completely obtainable. I will hope for good weather.

Also to comment about the in shape thing. Im in shape. so no worries there. 20-30 lbs. is doable (sp?).
