caz 0 #1 June 9, 2005 ok so this sounds like a really silly problem, but I've found recently that the cold air on my teeth in freefall while I'm grinning like a buffoon is really hurting! I have sensitive front teeth, and I don't use any whitening products etc because of this and don't bleach my teeth and I use sensitive toothpaste. I have only noticed it over the last 30 odd jumps due to the fact that I've been learning to freefly and am generally smiling a lot more in freefall because of that, I don't think its because my teeth are getting any more sensitive. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give me any pointers other than 'stop grinning'? I'd really like to keep this face rather than this one ! thanks - Caz ~~~ London Skydivers ~~~
Vallerina 2 #2 June 9, 2005 Haha! Yes, I've noticed the same thing happening to me! A full face helmet helps with it.There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

caz 0 #4 June 9, 2005 yeah but I like the feel of the wind in my face and don't want to cover it up with a full face! Esp now that I'm concentrating on learning to freefly. I've thought about smearing my teeth in sensitive toothpaste before every lift but other than the fact that I'll look like a prat I'd never actually remember to do that anyway! ~~~ London Skydivers ~~~
FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #5 June 9, 2005 I wonder if the dentist could make a clear mold that u could pop on and off to keep the cold away from the enamel of ur teeth while u jump ExPeCt ThE uNeXpEcTeD! DoNt MiNd ThE tYpOs, Im LaZy On CoRrEcTiOnS!

FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #8 June 9, 2005 i was trying to be scientific but hay that works edit: and i was talking like people that have those clear braces. its like trays that fit over the teeth. and they are like a hard plastic instead of soft rubber. not met to protect from impact just cold ExPeCt ThE uNeXpEcTeD! mailin 0 #9 June 9, 2005 Not a horrible idea actually. I don't have sensitive teeth, but I have TMJ and had a custom bite plate made to wear at night. ITs very form fitting (to the point where if I go a night or two without wearing it, it hurts to put it back on!) and clear. I'd have a hard time imagining it falling out without some serious force (I really have to pry at it). Other than that.... try some vasoline and see if that provides enough of a barrier. Sure, it tastes nasty, but its probably a good alternative to the $300 custom bite plate JenArianna Frances

FrEaK_aCcIdEnT 0 #12 June 9, 2005 i have TMJ also and have seen that exact thing, but i havnt gotten mine taken care of. I also know that that is very expensive to have made. thats why i just ment like something a lil cheaper. I would think the dentist would be willing to take impressions and have it done pretty cheap. Cosidering it didnt imvolve correcting jaw alignment or anything like that. edit: and I dont think it ould pop out that easy! if the dentist made the impressions. an orthodontist may be the best person to see about doing it! caz 0 #14 June 9, 2005 Quote I understand that! I only wear my full face if it's cold outside. I jump in England, its very rarely NOT cold outside! Certainly at altitude anyway! But thanks for the suggestion. One of my friends just suggested gagging myself on every jump, so I might try that, I talk too much anyway ~~~ London Skydivers ~~~
skytash 0 #15 June 9, 2005 If you go to Boots, they have sets for whitening which include trays you mould yourself from what I've seen. Don't know how much they cost, I was just after more whitening gel for the trays my dentist made for me. I found that initially the whitening stuff would make my teeth sensitive and the dentist suggested putting sensodyne in the trays for 10 mins before washing them out and doing the whitening stuff. So perhaps you could just wear it in the plane on the way up, put it in a ziplock bag in a pocket part way up then you wouldn't have to worry about it on opening! that gagging thing was meant for when you're on the ground, surely tashDon't ever save anything for a special occasion. I don't think that'd be much of a problem, considering you'd prolly bite down on it during opening. I totally understand not wanting a full face tho. I'd probably go with the mouthguard. caz 0 #18 June 9, 2005 that actually sounds like quite a good idea, I could make that part of my 20 min kit up call: put mouth guard with sensodyne in, faff about checking kit, go to loo for nervous wee, kit up, take out mouth guard rinse and spit, go get gear check, get on plane! cheers for the suggestion! ~~~ London Skydivers ~~~

Darshiva8 0 #20 June 9, 2005 I had braces back in Junior High and had to have a retainer made for my upper teeth to make sure they stayed in place. It's one of those clear plastic ones that have been mentioned already. Aside for the consultation with an orthodontist, it'll probably only cost about $150, they are molded to your teeth exactly, and I never had a problem with it falling out even in gymnastics. I always had to use my fingers to get it off to eat. It is way less bulky than a mouth guard, should block the wind well enough, and you can still talk with it in, so it doesn't really present all the much of an extra bit of hassle aside from remembering to pop it in before you jump. ************** For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. ~Leonardo da Vinci~
bob.dino 1 #21 June 9, 2005 Most rugby players get custom molded mouthguards. Call your local rugby club and ask them who they deal with - it's likely to be an orthodontist or a dental technician, and there's a good chance they could make you something custom that doesn't make you look like a prat. BigSky 2 #22 June 10, 2005 Why not just go to your local sporting goods store and buy a mouth piece. You can get the kind you mold by boiling it four like $5.00. I used them for years in boxing and I really dont think it would come out in free fall. At least you could see if you like it before paying for a custom one.“Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. bob.dino 1 #23 June 10, 2005 It's the looking silly bit I was trying to avoid... she doesn't need the protection (and therefore the bulk) of a regular mouthguard. So a dental tech should be able to make something much smaller to fit. I do agree though, that a $5 mouthguard would work nicely.
