Long before audibles...
We were doing 4-way from a 182 at 7200'. The base guy was built like a bowling ball, and we had to stand on our heads to catch him. Finally, we had a 3-way and the 4th was about 10 feet from docking when I checked my altimeter: 1100'.
I broke grips, back-tracked, and dumped, all in about one second. I looked down, watching the other guys dump, certain I was going to see one or more go in. It seemed like eternity until the last guy safely opened.
Oh, and I was jumping a borrowed rig.
I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't chosen that moment to do an altitude check.

"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
A few "close calls" I've had over the past year has dealt with me going out after a bigway..me freeflying...and learning to give enough separation as well as realizing that they break off and track off lower than freeflyers and pull lower than freeflyers..so I learned PDQ to keep my eye on them at breakoff, get the hell outta there and track more aggressively and pull a little lower than I usually do to keep a safe environment.

So welcome my friend, to Bonus Days."

As I recall...that poem was penned by a Mr. Carl Nelson.
Don't ever take those 'bonus days' for granted.
