close calls

Recommended Posts

When a whuffo asks. "Have you ever had any close calls ? "
I say "Yes. Everytime i drive to the dz."
Seriously, I think a lot of us have had our share of close calls in this sport.
Do we get 9 lives too ?
I think I might have
one or two left.
Too bad we don't get extra lives like a video game.
One wrong move, and it's Game Over. And you can't put in another quarter.
So i tell the whuffo. "Yea it's dangerous, not gonna lie, but so are cars."

Actually, you and I both know people who are on "Bonus Days."

Hope I'm never in that club.:o

Years ago I was involved in a wrap off the New River Gorge Bridge. At the after-party another jumper told me of his near fatal event, then offered a member-to-member toast:

"That nasty Grim Reaper got lost in the haze
So welcome my friend, to Bonus Days."

It made an impression. I've crossed that line a few more times and watched as friends have earned their step into bonus days. It's something to be avoided at all costs, but if you ever make the crossing, it's a pretty humbling experience that lasts the rest of a lifetime.

Long before audibles...

We were doing 4-way from a 182 at 7200'. The base guy was built like a bowling ball, and we had to stand on our heads to catch him. Finally, we had a 3-way and the 4th was about 10 feet from docking when I checked my altimeter: 1100'.

I broke grips, back-tracked, and dumped, all in about one second. I looked down, watching the other guys dump, certain I was going to see one or more go in. It seemed like eternity until the last guy safely opened.

Oh, and I was jumping a borrowed rig.

I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't chosen that moment to do an altitude check.

A few "close calls" I've had over the past year has dealt with me going out after a bigway..me freeflying...and learning to give enough separation as well as realizing that they break off and track off lower than freeflyers and pull lower than freeflyers..so I learned PDQ to keep my eye on them at breakoff, get the hell outta there and track more aggressively and pull a little lower than I usually do to keep a safe environment.
