Newbie 0 #1 June 19, 2005 I saw a guy (i think from Airspeed) doing this funky track on Good Stuff when he just continually barrel rolled and did this "corkscrew" track. I would think it's extremely difficult to do this but would like to see more of people doing this maneuver. Does anyone know where i can see any video? Thanks "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
NickDG 23 #2 June 20, 2005 You might mean something called the reaper roll. It's a tool you can use when you break off late and sloppy, and you're looking for clean air . . . NickD BASE
efex 0 #3 June 20, 2005 Hey, Its just called a barrel roll and its not difficult to do 1 or two revolutions, but any more and it becomes VERY difficult (i.e to mantain direction, vertical and horizontal speed). It is normally used as a technique to check air space around, below and above yourself before deployment (e.g tracking dives where seperation can become an issue or as nick said). Oh yea, and it looks cool on camera. Most FS & FF coaches can show you how to do this if you are interested. Newbie 0 #4 June 20, 2005 thanks, that's what i'm referring to. I can do like one revolution but as you say, once you start trying to barrel roll more than that, i find it really hard. I wish i could see some more video of this, anyone know of any? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

kallend 2,146 #6 June 22, 2005 On the whole you are better off developing a fast, flat track than working on something that looks good for the camera but will not take you as far. I've yet to see anyone barrel-rolling on break off from a 100+ way.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

I've yet to see anyone barrel-rolling on break off from a 100+ way. The 100+ ways you refer to are probably done because they look cool on camera. I agree that tracking is primarily a survival skill, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to do a cool acrobatic move if that's what you're interested in (obviously not WHILE tracking away from a big jump). We're skydiving, for FUN! If we only did things that were utilitarian, we'd still only be skydiving during airborne invasions (and we wouldn't do bigways because it would make us more visible to the enemy! ). But we turned it into a sport. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

StreetScooby 5 #10 June 22, 2005 Many years ago in Lodi, CA, I watched one of the employees there (John? - he's an Okie from Muskogee) do over a dozen barrel rolls on a line. It was absolutely beautiful to watch (...it was a small load, and I was clear). I asked him how he did it. He picked a point way out on the horizon and just kept his focus there, then just did it.We are all engines of karma
Newbie 0 #11 June 22, 2005 cool thanks, that's what im talking about, although he sort of goes into a headdown configuration. I'm wondering if anyone can track like this and maintain their heading and horizontal lift. I don't really want to learn this right now, i just was wondering if anyone could do it as i imagine it must be really hard. Newbie 0 #12 June 22, 2005 cool story and interesting technique, thanks. PS i'm not going to go out and try this during break off. I might try this on a solo, but i won't do it to compromise my flat track (which i have to say is fast enough to get me away from the formation). The main point of this post is to work out if anyone can do this, and specifically if there is video of it, so thanks to all contributors "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

StreetScooby 5 #14 June 23, 2005 The guy at Lodi looked like a fighter jet. Kept his track on a line, same heading, and maintained lift. He was actually _above_ me, that' s how much lift he had.We are all engines of karma
