Well done brother . . . I'm glad you came away with only minor owies.

Add me to the list of people that puts all four fingers in the toggle and uses only three in the front riser loops. I was taught to do it that way long ago.

I have landed canopies with rear risers, but only huge military canopies as a result of a broken control line. This post has convinced me to train on all of my canopies (except maybe tandems) landing with rear risers.

OK, that was cool.

I was thinking of the gopher hole at Perris that broke my ankle.

Nevermind.

I'm sitting here eating and just about choked on my dinner when I read that JP has fragile French bone structure.

Stop doggin me! My Mom occasionally gets pissed because with a name like John Patrick Kelly people aren't open to the fact that my maternal grandparents were named duGaul and Pelletier. I'm 1/2 French and am an aristocratic refugee driven to America due to some unfortunate French plague or persecution.

The Irish circumstance is easier to explain, Ireland not being as cool a place when Europeans were splitting the place heggeldy-peggledy.

So bite me. I'm a beautiful and petite 1/2 French nobleman much removed from Versailles.

(no pictures, Poxon, be cool)

Okay, now I'm sitting here drinking my rum and coke, and I almost spit that out. Yes, you are beautiful, but as for petite:ph34r: Which is fine with me, I like my men with something I can hang on to.

I'll re-evaluate how I hold my toggles. Any suggestion from swoopers?

I put the toggle completely over my hand. When I reach up for my fronts (or back for my rears) I hold the toggle in my palm with my pinkie and use the other three fingers (index, middle, ring) for my dive loops. You will never lose your toggle if you use that method.

Get your whole hand in there and lock down the toggle with your pinkie and ring finger when manipulating risers.

Also, stitch up the bottom of the toggle opening so the closure is a nice snugg fit on your hand. I also personally think the skinny toggles stay in my hands easier - they just have better feel...

oh... interesting... so make the opening just big enough to get the hand into it.... where did you get this hint?

When a good friend (also a French Canadian...) dropped a toggle on his Velo 96 last year and broke his pelvis in something like 8 places...

Things to think about when stitching up your toggles

1. First and foremost, will you be able to get your hands out of your toggles if you have a canopy collision. Once you sew them, practice yanking your hands out of them up high. If you can't get them out with one quick movement, IMO they are too tight.

2. Do you sometimes jump with gloves? If you do, this may not be the solution for you.

3. Do you lend people your gear? If you do, make sure they are aware of your mods. This goes for any self devised mods you make on your rig.

4. I like to demo canopies. Often when I do, I am jumping a riser and toggle setup not my own. If you plan to be doing a lot of jumps on different kinds of gear, you may want to wait to do something like this.

I'm not against the idea at all, and I am infact thinking of trying it out myself. But I like to play devil's advocate.

Another thing to think about, where do you wear your alti? I recently had my rigger make me a wrist strap so the alti sits atop my wrist joint, rather than on the back of my hand, where it interferes with the play of the toggle.
