airtwardo 7 #1 July 5, 2005 The latest Prachutist has an article about safety in the 60's...opening paragraph says something to the effect that 'back in the day' passing a baton was something that would get you an award. I turn on the news last week and there's a story with 20+ women setting a record...holding hands head down..wearing custom made brightly colored jumpsuits, parachutes 1/4 the size & weight of those used in the 60's...laser cut canopies flying faster than some of the jump birds used then. I say it's NOT ENOUGH! What ideas to push the envelope even farther, even FASTER... ~as far as the evolution of skydiving can we come up with? What would you like to see invented...tried...? Ideas???? ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

hookncrater 0 #10 July 5, 2005 My vote is for high-G freefly as discussed quite some time ago here. 2 or more freeflyers with straps attaching each other doing high speed orbitz and spins, kinda like the NASA multi-axis trainer on crack, but in freefall. You could call it veeflying, as in vomit.________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! wmw999 2,584 #12 July 5, 2005 Well, I WOULD say that we should use big jumpsuits to get more freefall time, but, well, that's been done... I do think we will sometime approach the limit of the number of formations that a 4-way team can physically do in working time, and may have to change the rules for the top teams. Anyone remember 4-way speed star competition? That said, I can see more and more interesting hooked up freefly & hybrid formations. Most people just like jumping with other people, and I can easily see more back-facing ones and the like. Also some wingsuit/small canopy (C)RW. Single parachute system...smaller & lighter harness with a single surface canopy... how about a ground based aad system that would radar your alti-speed-seperation and send a opening signal. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

johnnyboydan 0 #15 July 5, 2005 A parachute that packs itself good idea. But how about a plane that runs off of water so the jump costs come down and we have more time jumps to push and find new ideals.johnnyboy

Testing & certification of the Sigma tandem harness/container & passenger harness to handle a rigged weight of 550 lbs without a marked increase in fall rate (bigger drogue). rasmack 0 #24 July 6, 2005 Quotehow about a ground based aad system that would radar your alti-speed-seperation and send a opening signal. Just mount lasers on the skydiver to continuously monitor the exact distance to the ground, and hook it up to an AAD, or put radio transmitters on the ground to let an AAD calculate its position relative to the ground plane, or... Seriously, AADs could easily be developed far beyond what we have seen today. I think we may see a leap in developement of altimeters, and at some point someone will put it in an AAD.HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde... mr2mk1g 10 #25 July 6, 2005 We have airbags in steering wheels. Now they're in B pillars, doors and in roofs too. There's talk of putting them in bonnets to protect pedestrians. I've even seen an invention that puts them inside NFL helmets so that when they get a bad tackle to the head a neck brace inflates to prevent a neck injury... Maybe one day we'll see top swoopers with airbag swoop pants, triggered by a radar device which senses them going into the corner. Maybe "femur" will cease to be a verb in our sport? On one hand that seems pretty extreme... but then most whuffos are shocked as hell to learn we have £1000 worth of computer in our rigs which fires an explosively propelled razor blade to deploy our reserve if we're passing through 750ft faster than 78mph. Another one, which is already on the way in, is in air comms. I've just found myself an FF coach who is starting to use in air comms to train people. He said it's amazing and as clear as two people speaking on the ground. I understand some schools have just started trialing it for AFF students as well as some pro 4 way teams using it for training. This is going to be a huge advance and it's on its way in fast. On more (although rather more frivolous) will be air to ground live video feed (by that I mean reliable and commonplace as I realize it's already been done).
