Unconscious skydiver in freefall?

Recommended Posts

Isn't it peculiar that it happened to be buddy who was thought he was too good or too cool to wear a helmet for bigway RW that shit the bed and took out the skydive?

Darwin hard at work?

I'd have to say that personally, if I could catch up with the unconscious person (doubtful, I'm not that great a high-speed diver), I'd grab anything I could get ahold of and dump their main OR reserve as quickly as possible.
Waiting to get to a lower altitude is crazy, how are you going to feel if you lose your grip and they crater in after you had a chance to save them? You'd have to live with that the rest of your life. I would imagine an unconscious jumper if upside down in a U and spinning like a top, it wouldn't be an easy task to get ahold of them, I would think. Probably have to count of their AAD in 90% of the cases.

Shame, shame, you got to spot yourself.

Actually, no. You take responsability for the spot, but we cant always spot yourself. If you jump with a group, you need to trust whom ever is spoting. If you do a formation load, you pretty much HAVE to trust the pilots and GPS.

Odds are, if you do formation loads, there is a chance you will land off.

Yup. What's interesting is that individual has thousands of jumps, and has even been on several record RW jumps. Nobody ever questioned his qualifications, by every indication his ego was appropriately sized to his experience.

The lesson I took from that experience was simple. Absolutely anybody can (and everyone does!) screw up. Nobody is immune from collosal brain farts, no matter how much experience.

Moral of the story... wear a helmet kids. Anyone can instantly go Dennis Rodman on you. Just because you have thousands of jumps, doesn't mean someone behind you with even more jumps won't take you out.

Should that be a technical term? Going Rodman?

With my minimal experience you can be sure of one thing...I will not be following anyone to an off-field landing.

Well - why not top dock them and steer their canopy back to the DZ?
Your best chance of doing that is if you dump them out high and on their reserve.

I've seen an unconsious team mate top docked and steered out of a game reserve. Africa has some unique challenges.

If you pulled their reserve high, depending on the winds @ Perris they could end up on the 215, or the reclamation center on Goetz...maybe even Elsinore (ok, that's an exaggeration.) That canopy with brakes stowed is going to travel a distance with some wind.

what someone said about giving the person come to sealed it for me. I'd pull if the opportunity came, no waiting. No guarantee I could stay with them down to 4k anyhow.

The 215 would be bad, and very unlucky, but might still be survivable. Though if they're still unconscious after 10 minutes, they're in bad shape. Beats taking a chance on no opening or a cypres save at 800ft. Landing on the runway seems more probable than the 215 and could catch a pilot by surprise (?).
