Painful Pressure Buildup During Freefall. HELP!!

Recommended Posts

i never had a problem with the pressure that builds up in my head during the climb to alt. or the decent until my 1st boogie. on my 4th jump of the boogie, 1/2 way down (@ about 8k) masive pressure built up in my head and it felt like my eye was going to burst and my ears wouldnt come unpressurized, all on my left side. i tried swallowing and the yawning motion during the decent and it did nothing. What causes this and how can i make sure that doesnt happen again? Do you think it could be from the extra 4k of alt. i was getting?(normaly we only go to 10k with the c-182's) OR, Do you think it could be that the Otter and the Kingair climb faster? Im going to another boogie in a couple weeks(Couch Freaks) and i want to make sure it doesnt happen again. any info or suggestions would be great. Blue Skies, Rob

The pressure you're feeling is probably from your sinuses, but you can check with your doctor. I started having pain from clearing my ears every jump, and my doctor recommended a decongestant. So I've been using Afrin on the drive down to the DZ, and I haven't had any issues since.

I have issues with my ears also, either diving in air or water. I take a decongestant on the drive to the DZ as well and it does wonders. I was fighting the last gasps of a head old this weekend and it caught up to me on my fourth jump. I could hear popping and clicking sounds on the way up. I listened to my body and that was the last jump of the day for me. My ears were fine the next morning.

Were you at all "stuffy"???

I once was on a commercial airliner from Vegas to Denver... Something got "blocked" up in my sinuses.

It was the most painful thing ever. I could "feel" every change in pressurization of the plane. (If you ever take your alti on a commercial airliner, you will see the cabin is pressurized to 5K or so, but goes up and down quite a bit)...

The pain was in my jaw and face like you could not believe. In my ears too... And - I did not even feel stuffy - something was just "up" with my sinuses...

200 skydives and 150 commercial airline flights later, and never happened again...

yeah, kinda sounds like what happened to me. the pain was intense(not just because it hurt, but where and why it hurt). it felt like someone was gripping my eyeball from inside my head and squeezing it, the further i fell the worse it got. everyone ive talked to so far has said its do to the sinus's so i think im just gunna O.D. on Suidifed for about a week b4 the boogie. Man i hate that stuff.

I have had the same problem and Went to and EN&T doc. Here is what I do. I take Alegra twice a day, sudafed once in the morning and maybe a repeat in the afternoon, then I use Affrin nasel spray on the days I jump. This is the instructions that my doctor gave me and they may not work for you. I use to have the pressure build up and would get a bloody nose on decent.

You need to clear you ears every 3000 feet or so on the way up to altitude. Do this by holding your nose and gently blowing to unblock the one way valve in your eustation (?) tubes that traps pressurized air in your sinuses. You can also click your jaw from side to side. My friend does this in freefall as well, but I just do it on the way up and once my canopy opens. Talk to scuba divers on your dz if you have trouble.

cool, thanks for all the info. so the conclusion is drugs, drugs, and more drugs. does the Alegra make you all speedy like the Suidifed? :S

Why not try it one day when you're not skydiving and see how it affects you?

Sorry to say, but that is totally incorrect. Your ears clear automatically on ascent. It's descent where you have to do something..... ie, yawning, swallowing, valsalva...etc.....
