diverds 0 #1 August 23, 2005 The following was found on USPA's web site under USPA Board Meeting Completes for 7.17.05. The single bullet sentence reads: QuoteUSPA canopy relative work, relative work, and 3-D performance awards will be retired at the end of 2005. This would be awards such as the Falcon, Eagle, 4-stack, 8-stack and others. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think we should continue to have an awards program or not? freeflyimpaired 0 #2 August 23, 2005 QuoteWhat are your thoughts on this? Do you think we should continue to have an awards program or not? Its kinda sad to see that stuff go but I wouldn't be suprised if it just wasn't cost effective for them to keep that around any more. I've done my 4 point four way, my four stack and I've had a few attempts at the 3D dive but I've never sent in for any of my awards. I think thats what the problem is for them, although these things are being done nobody is really using the awards program. Thats my two cents, I could be wrong(and probably am). Joe. diverds 0 #3 August 23, 2005 If people don't want them then you're right, there is no reason in having them. If on the other hand there are still people that want them and it is an issue of cost, then why not just raise the price of the awards so the program pays for itself? The point of this poll is to see if there is a desire for the awards. Skydive Radio
tombuch 0 #4 August 23, 2005 I think I remember that possibility being announced in Parachutist long before the board made the decision. As I recall, Chris Needels used the awards as the topic of one of his monthly columns and asked for input before the board took up the topic. The issue was one of administrative cost for awards that had fallen out of favor with the membership. I think his query received very little interest in retaining the awards at the time. .Tom Buchanan Instructor Emeritus Comm Pilot MSEL,G Author: JUMP! CSpenceFLY 1 #5 August 24, 2005 I think we should worry more about what is being done to our sport with the coaching programs and such.I have been jumping only 7 yrs and I remember a time that you didn't have to pay someone to jump with you.My 13th jump was an 8 way with experienced jumpers that maybe didn't really want to jump with me but they took me along. What a difference it made. diablopilot 2 #7 August 24, 2005 I'd like my awards, but when I looked at applying for them all last year it was going to cost me well over $100. It ain't that big a deal to me.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
diverborg 0 #8 August 24, 2005 I guess the reason I haven't sent in for the awards myself is because of the cost. It's good enough for me to know that I've done it without the certificate. I have however sent in a for a couple because I found them very cool at that point in my skydiving career. I'm assuming uspa just doesn't have the interest in jumpers in keeping them. However, I don't understand why they need to get rid of them. What is the cost to filling out a little paperwork and sending a couple stickers. Will $30 per award not cover this (not sure if that's the cost)? If there are still people that want them, then keep em and let them pay for em. There must be more to it than meets the eye. All in all, its not a big concern of mine. They must obviously not be making money off of them if they want to get rid of them.
BillyVance 35 #9 August 24, 2005 The poll is not going to change USPA's mind. It's a done deal already. However, the crwdog community ARE planning to take over the CRW awards. Discussions are already underway and USPA is receptive to giving the CRW awards over for us to oversee. Besides, they weren't USPA's to begin with. I'm sure someone can step up to the plate and offer to take over the RW awards in much the same way. SkymonkeyONE 4 #10 August 24, 2005 I don't know why USPA would want to retire the awards. Regardless of how few people apply for them, the system is already in place and what paperwork and patches are needed are bought and paid for by the recipient. Doesn't make sense to ditch it. upndownshop 0 #11 August 24, 2005 If I remember correctly, long before USPA had these awards they would have an SCR application in the mag. Then they decided to drop it and created their "own" awards. Since they have decided not to continue their program they should give it back to the original program and put back the SCR application. The price of that award has never changed in the 40 years..$20.00. I know the awards are not exactly the same but why not help keep it going???? NickDG 23 #12 August 24, 2005 I can't fault USPA for trying to keep up with the times, but I believe it's turned into a hodgepodge of awards. Better to stick with the Gold, Diamond, and the rest of the mega-jeweled awards that have meaning to everyone. I remember standing with a group of old friends at Perris when we first heard of a new award, and I still start laughing even remembering it, called the Atmospheric Dolphin. Al Frisby and the rest of them are absolutely doubled over with laughter . . . NickD BASE
airtwardo 7 #13 August 24, 2005 Quoteit's turned into a hodgepodge of awards. *** I always thought it was just about the numbers. Everyone wants an award with a low number, and as the numbers climb there is less interest. I remember when the 4~stack awards came out.... we'd been doing CRW for quite a while before there was even any thought of an 'award' for it... a couple guys from the little DZ I was at sent in and got what at the time they considered high award numbers.... "Not fair, we had to be ahead of so&so" Then we figured we'd institute another 'harder' award... we all put our canopies in backwards and did CRW... WHAT???...already been done???? Okay...we'll do backwards and at NIGHT!!... THAT'S been done TOO?!?!? Okay....Backwards, at night, eating TWINKIES! It really got funny, some of the shit we'd come up with and DO... just so we could claim a "low" award number, real or not...! One guy we jumped with sent in for EVERYTHING... his jumpsuit was 5 pounds heavier than normal from all the patches. Just to piss him off... I sewed every cubscout and boyscout patch I could beg borrow or steal on MY 'silly suit'... Use to drive him nuts tryin to tell people he really 'earned' his patches... and that I was a 'poser' that was never even actually IN the cubscouts! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

I have all of the RW awards and half of the CRW awards so I don't have much desire to earn the remaining ones (all night CRW), so it's up to the up-and-coming jumpers to decide whether they want the awards... Most of the crwdogs have voiced their opinions to keep the CRW awards alive as they help motivate people new to CRW to get involved and feel a sense of accomplishment when they get that first 4 stack, etc... The wheels are already in motion for one of our own to take over the CRW awards if USPA hasn't changed their minds.
