FallingOsh 0 #1 August 26, 2005 My girlfriend just commissioned into the Air Force and leaves monday for Whichita Falls, Tx. I'm gradauating next year and will likely end up in Pensacola, Fl. For those of you in the military, do many bases have jump clubs? How do your commanders feel about you jumping? Do you just keep it to yourself and hope you don't break an important bone? -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life. ViperPilot 0 #2 August 26, 2005 They usually don't have a problem with it...depending on your job. You just have to get a generic safety briefing and then your commander signs off. Hopefully there's a DZ somewhat nearby. What's your girlfriend doing at Sheppard?
JYorkster 0 #3 August 26, 2005 I know there are quite a few people from Wichita Falls that jump at Skydive Dallas, but I couldn't tell you how far the drive is. I'm in Oklahoma City and drive 3.5 hrs to jump at SDD. As far as the jumping while on active duty, as has been said, let your supervisor and commander know about it. You'll probably get the standard hazardous activities briefing and go on your way. The more knowledgeable you are, the easier they accept it. AETC is sometimes a little more restrictive when you are a student, but I've never been told I can't jump. In fact, I jumped out there at Opelika while I was going through SOS. Supervisors will be even more accepting if/when you get your instructor ratings. If you've got more specific questions, PM me. Rock
Beerlight 0 #4 August 27, 2005 Nav trng for you??? If so, I'm fairly confident you will be prohibited from jumping until your class graduates. If P-cola is a permanent duty station, then like the other guy said, attend the safety brief for high risk sports/activites, fill out the form, have your commander sign off and then your home free.... slug 1 #5 August 27, 2005 Hi FO "military, do many bases have jump clubs" You can do a search on this websight, but AFAIK the answer is no if your asking about the the military supplying gear and aircraft and jumping on post/base, We have heard that some military facilities will support a Demo team, gear practice jumps etc. We started with a Air Force jump club, but had to jump at the local DZ. R.I.P.
CDRINF 1 #6 August 27, 2005 There used to be military jump clubs just about everywhere you went. Almost all shut down by the mid to late '90's due to budget and flight hour cuts. I think the only active Army club is at Fort Bragg, but they jump off post using civilian aircraft. There are several command demo teams around. As for jumping while on active duty in general, your boss can no more tell you not to jump than he can tell you not to ski, not to go scuba dive, not to hunt, ride motorcycles, etc. That said, while you are a student in some courses where the military is investing big $$$$ in your training, you sometimes may have to comply with a policy that prohibits high risk activities while in the course. In general, I don't talk much about jumping at work. Reason is, every once in a while, even in the military, you will run into some old coot who thinks that there is something inherently wrong with skydiving and that you shouldn't be doing it. As Colin Powell once said, "If you ask enough people for permission, you will eventually run in to the person in the organization who thinks it is his job to tell you 'no'," Chris Reed LTC, Infantry D-15996
nate_1979 9 #7 August 27, 2005 THere are some instructions in the Navy, depending on who you work for (aviation guys can get screwed) which the command can specificly say no skydiving etc.. I had someone at my command tell me that I was not allowed to do it anymore (an E-7).. My CO now knows that I do it and has no problems with it, so what that E-7 thinks is now no matter a concern.. So far though, in the navy, aviation guys are the only ones that have a specific instruction about "high risk" liberty activities. That being said, I talked to the Navy Safety Center about skydiving when the E-7 was talking shit, and they responded saying that they "Feel that skydiving is a relatively safe sport", along with spouting off stuff about USPA safety day, USPA training etc. Blues, Nate FGF #??? Shark 0 #8 August 27, 2005 I know several brown shoes (and a black shoe) that jump regularly.
FallingOsh 0 #9 August 27, 2005 QuoteWhat's your girlfriend doing at Sheppard? She's going through Maintainence Officer school. She'll be stationed at Hurlbert Field for her first assignment. I'm going through flight school when I graduate, so that's why I'm nervous about the regs. AETC tends to be a little tight in the sphencter. -------------------------------------------------- Stay positive and love your life.

ViperPilot 0 #11 August 28, 2005 Nice, Hurlburt's pretty cool...but screw humidity. I've heard the AF doesn't let you jump while at UPT. So, you may be out of luck for a little over a year or so. That's just hersey though, so you'll have to check. I would call someone in AETC...but yeah, they can be total dicks about stuff sometimes, so I wouldn't doubt it if they canned your jumping for a while. Sucks, but shit, what you'll be doing is definitely worth it.

Eule 0 #13 August 30, 2005 I'm not in the service, but a guy that got his A license this weekend at the DZ I go to is in the Air Force. I asked him if there is any sport jumping in the AF or if it's all "business" and he said it's almost all business. I am not sure where he is stationed but given the DZ location it almost has to be Tinker or Altus. EulePLF does not stand for Please Land on Face. brm04usna 0 #14 September 1, 2005 My buddy and I started skydiving together... he's now at flight school in p-cola, and said they're not allowed to jump once they start API (I assume until they're through Advanced). I'm now stationed in Charleston, and our base MWR organizes semi-regular trips to take people skydiving (Tandem or SL though because that's what the local DZ offers I think). so it depends. Something that I think some DZs should look into as another source of new students.. MWR trips can definately attract some people, especially if they offer a small discount to the group. I have never seen skydiving offered through my MWR. FGF #??? I miss the sky... There are 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary and those who don't.
