CREEPS user feedback

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to report on my new CREEPS system that I started jumping last weekend. Man, that thing rocks! I had my rigger install the system with all the options, including the RAD unit and canopy recovery system. After reading the manual several times and rehearsing all the advanced procedures, I was ready to jump. And, as fate would have it, a malfunction! Lucky for me that my eyesight is 20/20, as the display is a little on the small size. But even so, as soon as I felt like something just wasn't right, it only took a few quick seconds to realize my display was advising me to cutaway. Three quick pushes of the MCRB button and I was in freefall once again. And it was such a relief when the RAB button worked as advertised! The only disappointment was the fact that my main landed right in the middle of the packing area so I didn't get a chance to even try the main canopy tracking system; to tell you the truth I was a little skeptical that it would actually work from 9 miles away. And I was really looking forward to using the CALM mode, as I have had problems with hooking a little late. Hopefully on my next jump I'll get to ride my main and I'll report on the accuracy of the swoop landing functions then (providing I flare soon enough). Kudos to the engineers and designers of the product. BTW, since my main riser 3-ring loops are now severed, my rigger advises that maybe it would be cheaper for me to buy some risers on the internet instead of rebuilding my old ones. Anyone got any good velcro-less risers for sale cheap?

There are many potential problems with this device - you have highlighted the problem with needing to replace the risers. Others would point to the potential disasterous consequences of a mis-fire. Some may concluded that it leads to complacencey or a willingness to neglect training. You may be concerned by the fact that you are relying on softwear to perform what has been up to now a manual task. You may conclude that the user interface, being entirely based around the watch unit, is too small for use in emergency situations or not user friendly enough. Many may have concerns that newbies will be tempted to pick this device up without the appropriate EP re-training.

PM for my personal concerns with the system.;)

Will future versions of the system include a clamping system to hold a cut 3-ring loop? That way you would be able to reuse your risers.

I must say, I am very much looking forward to seeing the system. Can you send a demo to West Tennessee Skydiving?

I've got an idea for a great advance with the MKII of the system. How about you replace the three rings with a pair of electro-magnets!

Then all the CREEPS has to do is switch the magnets off and hey-presto a cutaway. Similarly the user could manually action a cutaway by simply hitting the trip switch.

Thus you have infinatly re-usable risers.

The clamp would go on the part that had been cut in the past, and then the system would just release the clamp to cut the loop. Finding the small end of the riser loop that had been cut off would become the most challenging part of finding all your components, though.

You know, I saw the ad in Skydive for this, and had to really sit down and read the whole thing. I also had to make sure it wasn't April 1st.
I think I'll wait and let them work out the bugs on this before running out to get one. For now, I think I can cut away on my own without some kind of "watch" telling me to cut away.

I would recomend that Pier offer them in more colors.

A friend of mine and I were doing a CReW jump this weekend, and the watches nearly killed us. We had taken them off at the DZ, and people were looking at and handeling them, all fascinated by this new device. Somehow, we inadvertently ended up with the other person's device.

I wrapped my friend following a very bad dock, and he was wrapped up pretty tightly, lines around his neck and everywhere.

I pointed the lense up at the wrap, waiting for instruction. (I would also ask that a CReW friendly algorythm be implemented on the next upgrade. The ball of shit with twitching legs poking out seemed to confuse the processor for a few seconds)

A few moments later, the screen readout confirmed my suspicion that I should cut away.

I followed the electronic cutaway procedure, but...yes, you guessed it. We had accidentally swapped devices so I ended up cutting away his canopy instead. This was a mess.

As he fell through my canopy, we were both knocked unconcious. Fortunately, we had set our watches to alarm at a certain time to remind us to check altitude and heading. The alarm went off and we came to.

We quickly assessed the situation, and both began hacking our way out with our hook knives.

We fell free, and at the last moment, initiated the electronic reserve deployment procedure.

Wow! what a ride!

We've put little stickers on them now so that we know whos is whos, but they operated exactly as promoted.

Thanks, Marcus. I owe you a case of beer!

Stay safe,
Mike

I would suggest the addition of a snooze button for the alram. I know in CRW, cutaway altitude and cutaway time do not always happen at the same second. I'd like to be able to hit snooze and be reminded later.
Canopy locator does not always work right. We set out to find a cutaway canopy last Sunday but the device took us to a Tandem cutaway that had taken place several weeks before.
I'd recommend waiting until they have the bugs worked out.

Think they're going to sell just the watch separately? The abuse potential is tremendous... just imagine being on a load full of people with these on thier rigs... you get in the door, turn around, give them all a great big cheezy grin, and push the cutaway button on your watch as you jump out the door... ;)

Of course he's a rigger, that's why he had me install it... I want to learn the business and I figured if I could do this, he'd sign me off for another packjob.

Nice piece of equipment, but the ad doesn't show the battery connection... quite the wiring! Once installed though, I've got to say... Noice!

I actually had someone from the Naval Special Warfare Group call me and ask me how much they are and that they wanted 20 of them!

Dosn't surprise me, those boys aren't the brightest, must be from sucking all that compressed air out of a hose;)

The locator function worked pretty well for me...activated it, followed directions and it found the Chicken Scratch bar in Tennessee. No canopy, but a good time was had by all!
My reality and yours are quite different.
