Getting Paid for Stadium Demo Jumps

sorry to hijack

If you have to apologize for it, then it stands to reason you really shouldn't do it to begin with.

It all depends on demand as well as your reputation. If they want only the best demo jumpers around, they will be prepared to pay upwards of $1000 per person, and more. If they don't really need a demo jump and you really want to do it, you may not get much, maybe $50, if anything. The large part of the cost of stadium demos are usually going to be the demo insurance, and it's usually the stadium owners or event promoters who pay that.

It really depends. I've gotten as much as $250 (for a stadium demo that was cancelled at the last minute due to winds over the limit, and I would have gotten $500 if it had been done successfully), and I've done one for free (a state school for the deaf's homecoming football game) because they couldn't afford to pay anything. Of course, I won't do another one for free.

what does it cost you to do a stadium demo - in terms of time or money spent before the go/no go decision. Do you prejump the site?

It depends on where the demo is and how far you travel to get there. If I can prejump the site, I will, but oftentimes you don't have that opportunity, so getting a practice jump at a nearby DZ or your home DZ is an option, especially if you're jumping extra gear like a flag or smoke.

The no-go demo was in Michigan, a good distance from where I and the other demo jumpers live (AL, SC, & MD), so we had the sponsors pay us half the fee if we couldn't jump and that just barely covered our travel expenses.

Demo insurance depends on the level of coverage required. If $1,000,000 of coverage is required (just enough to cover the legal costs of defending yourself if you hit some kid on landing), the premium I think is around $800. Some high profile demos may require more.

You also consider the cost of using the plane involved and the pilot fee. Then there's ground crew, which you MUST have, to coordinate the LZ clearance and timing, and is in contact via 2 way radio with the jump pilot.

Don't get me started on the paperwork required and the pre-planning. That takes a lot of time, especially if the FAA FSDO in the area covering the demo doesn't know you well.

Every demo is different. You can get better details from Airtwardo, who's part of the Liberty Parachute Team, one of the premier demo teams in the country.

So what you're saying there is a big difference between what you get paid...and what the demo cost!;)

I've done a lot of stadium jumps and if I just have to show up and jump, the average 'pay' is between 300 & 500 $...but If I have to 'set up' the jump it costs more.

I just signed one for later in the year for a bit over 55000.00 for 4 jumpers with smoke & flags.

Out of that comes the insurance, the aircraft & pilot and the travel logistics.

I've done a few stadium jumps, not nearly as many as twardo, and I am in the $100 to $300 average per jump range.

Airtwardo, did you include one too many zeros in your post? $55,000.00? or did you mean $5500.00? Just curious if we are doing something way wrong? Thanks.

oopppppps!

5500.00...!!

I WISH I could add another zero!;)

$5,500 for a 4 person demo is a reasonable price. If you do a demo for a couple hundred dollars or beer money you are telling the sponsor that is all you are worth. To do a demo right takes time and effort on the part of all involved. When you consider the about of time it took to gain the expertise to do a stadium jump, the cost of the gear on you back and your exposure to potential liability $5,500 is a damn good price.
