clouddancerss 0 #1 September 8, 2005 I'm going to be turning 50 in January, and in the Spring I plan to go through the AFF program.I'm just wondering if anyone knows how many people my age do AFF, compared to other age groups.
panzwami 0 #2 September 8, 2005 I don't know any actual statistics, but I do know that it's not at all uncommon. I've personally seen dozens of people that age (and older) going through AFF.
MB38 0 #3 September 8, 2005 In my first jump course, I was the youngest at 20. There were four 26-28 year olds and two 50+ year olds.I really don't know what I'm talking about.
bigern13 0 #4 September 8, 2005 I know of a guy at my DZ who is 56 (if I remember right) and a lady who was in her mid 40's. I dont think its all that uncommon either. "I love 'lamp'." -SKYMAMA
scrublink 0 #5 September 8, 2005 I have seen several 40-60 year old people go through the course. Good physical and mental health are the basic requirements to start on your way.
jsaxton 0 #6 September 8, 2005 I started 3 years ago when I was 45, I now have > 1000 jumps.
EvilLurker 2 #7 September 8, 2005 I started jumping when I was 41, if you're in good physical condition, you won't have a problem. Packing will give you a workout for a while, though, and kneeling on the floor of a Cessna for 35 minutes gets a bit old.

alw 0 #10 September 9, 2005 Did it at 54 in April-May. At 117 jumps now. This is the second time around for me - I went through military training in the 60's and static line in the 70's but laid off for 30 years, so just zeroed the clock and started over. I'm having a ball and just taking it easy on the body - plenty of stretching and occassionally Aleve or Advil. Have a ball and don't rush. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
fmmobley 0 #11 September 9, 2005 I did it at 54 in February and am having a blast. There are a lot of guys at my DZ who are over 40, one regular jumper is over 60.... Marion

The USPA asks for demographic info when you sign up or renew your membership. They publish a summary each year - the summaries for the past few years are linked from http://www.uspa.org/about/sport.htm . It's not broken down by training methods, but in 2004, the summary says that a bit under half of all USPA members were 40 or older, and about one-fifth of them were 50 or older.
