NtheSeaOrSky 0 #26 October 6, 2005 bill-I would expect if there were a discounted memorial type situation, there would be rules, such as no advertising/product names that would constitute what a memorial is. bytch-I didn't say I had all the answers, I just offered up a few suggestions on how it might be considered. As for the companies with little advertising budget, well I can assure you my personal advertising buget is MUCH smaller than theirs! They have no sympathy from me in that regard. Every sales oriented company has advertising built in to their business plan, and there are more ways to increase that than to cut jobs and raise prices, but that is a business decision for each company to make. They don't have to advertise in the magazine, there are other publications, other venues, so it isnt like anyone is making them. Nick-I didnt mean to sidetrack your thread and for that I apologize. Best of luck!Life is not fair and there are no guarantees...

weegegirl 2 #28 October 6, 2005 I live in Fredericksburg. That's where the new headquarters is. Kind of a "bleagh" town. But it's only 30 minutes from Skydive Orange, which is a fantastic dz. Nancy did a great job in my opinion. It'll be hard to follow in her footsteps. Best of luck on getting the job. I debated going for this position myself. Sounds like a fun opportunity. I bet you'll do great. Cheers.
PrairieDoug 0 #29 October 7, 2005 QuoteI dont understand why people complain about the magazine, I've always enjoyed reading it... Ditto ...I think Parachutist has been consistently outstanding.
JeepDiver 0 #30 October 7, 2005 At least we will know who to complain to when the magazine arrives late or not at all. I think my mailman keeps stealing mine... the bastard!
LouDiamond 1 #31 October 7, 2005 QuoteOne way could be to mark up the advertising fee and decrease the memorial fee to help offset the cost of printing. And when the already stretched thin advertising budgets most companies have can no longer pay for ads then what? The companies stop advertising or advertise less which means that were back at square one on prices. Printing magazines or books is no easy task as it can be expensive even when bought in large volumes. Throw in that fact that it is full color and the price keeps going up. The USPA has no influence on the current market rate for printing publications, they are consumers of a printing company, but they(USPA) must be able to provide a magazine to the members that can at least pay for itself otherwise your member fees could possible go up. Print companies don't care if it's a memorial page or not, to them it is another page in a magazine with X amount of pages and is priced according to how many sheets of paper are used among a slew of other factors. So for USPA to make memorial pages cheaper and pass the cost onto advertisiers would be self destructive to the magazine in the long run. The preceeding explanation is a very short and simple discription of a fairly large operation that has to be done weeks in advance so that you get a copy every month on schedule. If the average person knew what went into making something as simple as a magazine that shows up every month on their doorstep they probablly would be a bit more understanding and complain less. Although, we seem to live in a society that loves to Bitch just for the sake of bitching sometimes."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
NtheSeaOrSky 0 #32 October 8, 2005 While I can appreciate your unbiased view on the subject.... I do understand what goes into 'the making of that magazine', the costs, the expenses, and so forth. I also clearly understand where the revenues are generated. I also very intricately understand business budgets, costs, and revenues. I posted my opinion on the matter and I respect that some of you do not share my opinion - doesn't change my view. I can buy a full page ad full color in a premium location in several medical journals for less than a memorial page in Parachutist. Funny how that works. We also live in a society where people follow blind faith without questioning and improving their world, but to each his own!Life is not fair and there are no guarantees... airtwardo 7 #33 October 8, 2005 That's for those of you who know me to decide, but in any case, please write them and give USPA a nudge in one direction or the other . . . *** Will do my Brother! And since you're too humble... I'd like to encourage USPA / Dizzy.com members to please do drop the 'Boyz' in Va. a quick note to recommend Nick DiGiovanni for the upcoming open position of Magazine Editor. For those that don't know Nick, he has extensive experience over the last couple decades in not only writing for several rags, but successfully, publishing-managing-editing a couple of magazine creations of his own. He's knowledgeable, open minded, VERY organized, and I truly believe, were he given the chance, some very interesting and positive things will find their way into our monthly 'Fish Wrap'... Should you need further proof that Nick is the best candidate for the position.... click his 'user posts' and read a couple hundred pages!
