Interesting Otter Modification

Anyone seen these on an otter before? Bonus points if you know why they are "normally" installed.;)

Don't they put them on when they use skis or floats?

I know that the 747 that carries the shuttle has them - but it doesn't have skiis :P

You got it...pretty interesting that they are on a jump plane!;) They install them for increased rudder control while on water.

Well, quite a few Otters were configured as float planes initially. In any case, they would make me a little nervous if I was jumping a wingsuit. [:/]

They are installed for increased longitudinal stability for any aircraft that has external additions moving the center of pressure forward. e.g. floats, space shuttle, or anything else ahead of the center of gravity that would catch air and throw your longitudinal stability off.

Think if you put extra fins (or anything that catches air) near the front of an arrow. You'd have to add extra or larger fins near the back to keep the arrow flying straight.

It has nothing to do with water, per se, just aerodynamics. :)

Found it funny as hell that you thought it was nessasary to black out the tail numbers.

Like it's really all that difficult to figure out who "owns" that aircraft with that paint scheme and a jumper with those colors getting into it!
