October 28, 2005 BASE Jumper Rescued After Jump From CBS 13 Tower

(CBS 13) WALNUTE CREEK A Walnut Creek BASE jumper is in the hospital Friday after a birthday stunt left him dangling nearly 200-feet above the ground from a television transmission tower Thursday night.

Jumper John Agnos was able to call rescue crews from a cell phone after his parachute got tangled on a guy-wire to the broadcast tower used by CBS 13. He told rescuers he believed he had broken both his arm.

Agnos was stuck for about five-hours while fire fighters formulated a plan to get him down. The final plan was for a firefighter to climb the wire and lower Agnos down with climbing gear.

Agnos was charged with climbing the pole and could face a $1000 fine and up to a year in jail. He may also be responsible for paying the bill for the rescue

Climber injured in fall planned to parachute

A California man injured in a fall at Garden of the Gods was climbing without proper equipment and planning to parachute off a rock, authorities said Tuesday.

John Agnos, who turns 41 next week, was scaling North Gateway Rock without a rope when he fell about 6:30 p.m. Monday. He had broken bones and other injuries, rescuers said.

He had planned to BASE jump at about 280 feet, said Lt. Carl Lyman of the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Instead of jumping from planes like sky divers, BASE jumpers leap from fixed objects such as cliffs or bridges. BASE is an acronym for building, antenna, span and earth.

“That’s the first time we’ve ever heard of anybody trying to do that out there,” Lyman said.

Colorado Springs police were investigating but hadn’t cited Agnos as of Tuesday afternoon for not having required climbing gear, such as ropes and carabiners for attaching ropes.

Agnos had been climbing for about 90 minutes before he fell about 60 feet, police said. He had a climbing permit for the park, Garden of the Gods officials said.

“He was almost killed in Las Vegas doing this a while ago, and here he is doing it again,” Lyman said.

More information on the Las Vegas jump incident wasn’t available.

Agnos couldn’t be reached for comment.

He was taken to Penrose Hospital, and his condition wasn’t available Tuesday.

A BASE jump from 500 feet can have a parachute ride of about 10 to 15 seconds.

BASE jumping is not illegal, but many jumpers do it covertly because they can face trespassing or reckless endangerment charges.

The Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho, is believed to be the most frequently jumped site nationwide. The small town welcomes BASE jumpers. An estimated 5,000 jumps are made each year from the 486-foot bridge. Two people have died jumping there.

BASE jumpers leap between a few thousand feet and a couple hundred feet.

Martin Tilley, who has made more than 900 jumps, estimates there are between 3,000 and 5,000 BASE jumpers worldwide.

“A lot of jumps are never even spoken of,” said Tilley, owner of Asylum Designs, a California-based company that makes equipment for BASE jumping.

Like many jumpers, he’s had close calls.

“That’s the nature of it. Everybody does,” Tilley said.

Some experienced BASE jumpers encourage others to write letters to their families to be opened in case they die jumping.

What about his Vegas Jump anyone know???
