billvon 3,116 #1 January 3, 2006 Good article on the now-infamous ADIZ bust (two pilots flying a 150 over the White House) in the Jan 2006 AOPA Pilot magazine. As usual the mainstream press got many of the details wrong; it's a good read.
ltdiver 3 #2 January 3, 2006 You got your copy already? What, are they working their way from the coast in? ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
itllclear 1 #3 January 3, 2006 It's available on line. http://www.aopa.org/members/files/pilot/2006/flight0601.html Some people should not be allowed closer to the controls of an airplane than seat 13D. I'll be doing the demo at Cable this weekend if the wx clears. Ask me more about it after I calm down a bit. Harry"Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
robr 0 #4 January 3, 2006 Says members only to me I'm probably not going to get a paper copy either, -- someone PM'd it to me; thanks!
kallend 2,148 #5 January 3, 2006 So what in the proposed tightened up regulations will prevent this happening again? You can't legislate against incompetence.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
pilotdave 0 #6 January 3, 2006 Yeah, I read about half the article, thinking there was going to be some good explanation for what happened. Nope, the guy was just so incredibly far out of the loop that he really had no business flying. The fact remains that a C-152 isn't a threat to national security, but this was just a silly ADIZ bust. There have been a few that made a lot more sense, like a guy that filed a flight plan into college park airport (inside the flight restriction zone, which is inside the ADIZ) and got ATC clearances innapropriately all the way in. He did everything right, and nobody told him what he was doing was illegal. He was met by the FBI upon landing, but was allowed to leave later that day I think (but only with a local pilot on board who was cleared to fly within the FRZ). They do have ways now to help prevent this kind of thing from happening again, like the laser warning system. But I guess if you've never read about it, you'd just fly along wondering why the inside of your plane is flashing red and green. Dave
