psf 1 #1 February 8, 2006 After a few posts about licenses lately, I was wondering what percentage of people did the formation vs individual skills requirements to obtain their next step. Where I jump, they will only sign off for your next license IF you complete the individual skills on heading within the timeframe given.ignorance is not bliss
NWFlyer 2 #2 February 8, 2006 I did the formation requirements. I find it surprising that a DZ would not allow you to complete the requirements that way. If you have the jumps to complete the formatoin requirements logged in your logbook and signed off by licensed jumpers, I would (personally) find an instructor who will sign off on them if that's the approach you want to take. Makes me wonder what the motivation is for requiring the other way ... revenue from a couple additional jumps with an instructor? Well, it's not required for an instructor to jump with a person compleating the requirment so i doubt that is it. It just needs to be loged. Maybe they want a person to show the skills personally as opposed to being "base" for a group of expierenced skydivers to dock on. "We've been looking for the enemy for some time now. The skills test is an alternate method of showing proficiency.

Maybe I read too much into the original post... it sounded to me like they were only willing to sign off on something they'd seen themselves rather than trusting logged formation jumps. I guess I should get clarification from the original poster before I jump to conclusions.

I'm just questioning why a dropzone would *require* that approach, rather than allowing its jumpers both options, as provided by USPA.
psf 1 #7 February 9, 2006 To answer your question. Yes, it is only a cessna dropzone. We do formation flights with both cessna's up only a couple times a yr. to get an eight way or better. No, it is no cost for the series, but we do need to get it on video or seen by rater. And, no they have never charged for that attempt. But, keeping that in mind, we do need to ask, and be ready when they are not tied up with video or coaching. I personally feel the series is a good way to go. Like earier posted, someone could always be a base, or helped with others for the formation. Series is only your skill....ignorance is not bliss
