Getting the canopy smaller to pack

Recommended Posts

Psycho packing... S-folding in reverse order... this... that... or the other thing... it all pretty much boils down to pack more and you'll get better.

Pratice packing sucks... its all the work and none of the fun... jump more, you'll pack more and the sooner you'll get better at it!

Maybe practice packing does suck, but as with learning to play the piano, practice makes perfect. To you it's still new, still and adventure, and packing at home gives you something to look forward to for the weekend, so keep on doing it.

Psycho packing works just fine, I've done it, but don't currently because pro packing works just fine. Since psycho is basically a pro pack up until you roll the thing, you need to learn the pro pack anyway. Right now, pro packing is the basic technique you need to master. Psycho is an extra frill you can consider later on, when you're comfortable with your pro pack.

Stuffing any canopy into a bag is a pain. I think the gear manufacturers have a conspiracy that all d-bags must be 2 sizes too small for the canopies that go into them.....

Hey

Just keeping after the air that wants to breath in.

Give it as little chance as possible - like, when you're on your stomach mashing out the air and working the material into the cocoon, just keep working it out, tucking, ect. When you get to your knees and are about to S-fold - keep after that air trying to creep in - use hands, elbows, head, whatever.

For myself, been psycho-packing since early 96, right around the time Parachutist first ran the article and it's a perfectly fine packjob (I've jumped Sabers1's, Batwings, & Crossfires for most of my skydiving life) - really, just a pro-pack for the most part with a 180 degree line twist on layout (which gets removed later on) and rolling the cocoon like a sleeping bag instead of the S-fold. I'll pro-pack maybe twice a year to remind myself I can still do it but (for me) the psycho-pack is just way more time-efficient and the openings are certainly consistant (knock wood) - which I really prefer in loaded elliptical la-la land.

Anyway, just keep at it and you'll get it down to the point to where you'll almost forget how tricky it was learning how to pack when you started.

Also, a really good habit to get into is good habits. In other words, try to pack the same way, front to back, in the same sequence, checking the same things, in the same order, every time you do it. Kinda like a pre-flight checklist if you follow. It's just a good idea and it will enhance your ability to spot anything potentially wrong with your parachute system as you pack.

Good luck!

-Jerry

I got a brand new rig last week, I've been practicing packing (well, trying to practice packing) for the last few days.....I can't even get it into the bag.

I AM SOOOOO FRUSTRATED!!! [:/]

it can be hard with a brand new parachute....really slippery! I got my rig brand new too. It took a while for my parachute to not slide around all over the place.
I may not agree with what you have to say but i'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Well, DUH! That was my point, the more jumps the more pack-jobs, the faster someone gets better at packing... if they want to drag their rig out and pack it over and over at home... that's good too... geeze... sometimes I think we need a sarcasm font around here... :S

I have been given the priviledge and honor of a master rigger taking me under his wings. My good friend, Waltappel, set it all up. This man, Bill, is Walt's best friend. Walt called me up last Saturday night and strongly urged me to meet him at Bill's house. I'm so glad I didn't turn the invite down. This guy is an absolute genious, and I am going back Thursday for a complete packing lesson.

I'm sure he can show me the psycho pack as well as how to pro-pack better. I'm just very excited for this opportunity.

With guidance like that, I'm sure you'll be packin' like a pro in no-time. :)

I must admit that the canopy I still jump is known as a blue smack because of some of the openings that some people had.

BT SERIES PRO 120 ;)
(As in my profile pic.)

Over the last 8 years I have found the canopy very nice to use for camera and fun and it is the way you pack the beast that matters!!!Of the 1,900 jumps plus I had had with it only one maybe two openings were cause for swearing ;)

As far as packing into a smaller volume I might suggest talking with some good packers and instructors and most of all learning a technique that works for you. If you have a hard to pack canopy that was made to suit your rig then it is a matter of learning to pack properly.

If your canopy is new then personally it is just a matter of controlling the beast into the bag. The first >50 jumps on most new canopies are going to be really messy so it is really a matter of getting the beast into the bag and making things neater after that. I find that rolling the bottom half of the bag and the upper half toward the centre does help (Once in the bag.)

Another method is the reverse roll IE- Instead of pre d baggin the canopy like a student one fold it the other way.

Left hand just above your knees for the first fold, right hand above that fold bringing the whole coccooned canopy back in a reverse but similar way. Much easier especially with a newer, slippery canopy!

I agree with jlskycam... Whatever the method of getting the canopy into the bag, phsyco/S-folds/cramming a mess, you are really just trying to find different and creative ways of controlling the air that you have just purged from the canopy. When you are new to packing this is key! Learn to use any free part of your body to keep the canopy "cocoon" together after you have laid it down. When you are putting it in the D-bag, you need to use your knees and your forearms alot to keep control of the canopy while keeping your hands free to do the things that require your fingers like grabbing the D-bag and squishing extra material in the bag.

The absolute most important thing when learning to pack is patience. It's very hard to not get frustrated and upset. But don't worry... if you've done everything right up untill putting the canopy in the bag... it'll probably work no matter how sloppy it is getting it in there (provided you do everything right after putting the canopy in the bag as well ;)). If you screw it up really bad, don't just back up a step and try it again.... go all the way back to the begining and start again.

Good luck with all that, you'll have great personal gratification once you nail it. And then you will never want to do it again.

The absolute easiest way to get it to pack up smaller, better, easier, nicer, flatter, prettier.... give your rig and some of your money to one of us packers. :P

Yup, thats what I have been doing for the past 2 years.
The packers would get $7.00 (PD190) I would put a 10
spot in the reserve flap. I didnt care about money then.
This year will be different because of financial ruin.
So out comes the rig on the living room floor to
prepare for the 2006 season. After careful observation
I have come to the conclusion that PD has a area 51
that installs a very small person(not visable to the naked eye) with a huge pair of lungs that is programed or instructed to expel huge amounts of air
once boby pressure is released from the squashed miserable piece F$%^ing nylon(what ever you want to call it). I can and authorized to offer this advice......
If you do buy the tape "Pack Like A pro" then prepare yourself with a TV brick.Billy Weber packs a rig faster than I can make sandwich or open a beer... WTF..
I am laughing as a write this but it just takes time and fu%^ing patience. Popping a vein ( I have several) really sucks.Oh well gotta go ,.. good f^&%ing luck with that defiant piece of "living cloth" hehe
