Having coaches video AFF jumps

Recommended Posts

This is a spin-off of the other thread, where a frustrated jumper was spinning too much, and folks suggested having his next jump videotaped for analysis.

I'd like to do that on my next jump. Since I'm only interested in the raw footage, and not any editing or music or anything (unless it turns out spectacular, heheh), how should I go about getting it done?

Would you recommend that someone other than my coach video the jump, so that the coach can concentrate on watching my technique? Or is it safe to simply have the coach wear a camera?

Regarding payment for the service, how is that typically handled? Without the editing services, I'm assuming that the DZ would not charge the full amount they usually do for the folks who tape their first jumps.

If I don't need a third person to tape the jump, is it okay if I simply pay/offer my assigned coach something straight from my pocket to his for the service? Or is that a breach of etiquette, since the DZ itself wouldn't be making any $$$ off of his services under that circumstance? (And as great as they are, I wouldn't want to "go behind their back," so to speak, y'know?).

Thanks for all your input.
"DOOR!!!"

I regularly wear my video helmet when I do AFF (from either side). A .3 lens allows me to get everything I need to see in-frame without distracting me from my job of taking care of my student. I debrief with my raw footage and I don't charge anything for it. There are at least three of us here at Raeford that do it this way.

I have had, and Red is having, several of my AFF jumps videoed that way. The instructor wears a camera and uses it for debriefing at no charge. I normally give the editing guy a tip to have him put it on a disk for me anyway. First off, you must have an instructor that shoots video.

At my DZ, if you are haveing trouble with something and they are not super busy, it is easy to find one of the vediots willing to shoot your jump for cost. His jump ticket + pack + tip to the editer = apox $35 and the DZ dosen't mind not making a cut as it is in effort to fix your problem.

I used to think Chuck was a big giant money hungry prick.......Now I just think he is a prick:)
Not really, it turns out Chuck is a pretty alright guy once you get to meet him in person.

Back on topic --- I have jumped at a few DZs doing AFF and coach jumps and have never had a problem giving my students the raw footage I shot, which I wear a camera on every AFF jump.

The first video I give them which includes the tape I provide, I ask but don't require that they buy beer for the DZ (a six pack is good but a case is great) after the first I no longer even ask

I have never had a problem 'cutting the dz' out of video money (basically because the raw video is not of professional quality - lots of movement etc).

I know of one DZ here in Texas which requires all of its instructors to wear video - I am not sure if the video is given for free though

if i was paying for the slot or anything i would hire a camera flyer not an AFF instuctor.

and that's absolutely available at any dropzone. That's not what he was asking for though. He was wanting debrief footage so that he could better understand what he was doing wrong. Yes, a guy out front and a little high could get the entire body, but I promise you that I can get any relevant problem in frame, without trying, from the main side while hanging on. We don't push outside AFF video at this dropzone at all, but more than willing to provide it for standard video cost if that is what the student wants.

At our DZ you got two choices. If your coach or instructor doesn't have a camera helmet (none of ours do) you pay my slot slot. I'll dump raw footage on your tape (mini DV, DVD, disk or VHS) for nada. Or hire me as a coach and I take camera helmet and debrief with it; no charge.

Hey man, I owe you at least 2 cases!!

Not all dz's in Texas require it though. It was $45. just for raw footage on my last 2 jumps, if you wanted it on video. Last 2 jumps I made, didn't even have a post jump video to look at problems/issues.
Thought that sucked too!

This is one of the major reasons that I only just reciently got my coaches rating because I can jump with my camera on my head and if I miss things during the jump its likely that the camera will still see it and I can use it for the debrief.

at the DZ i did my AFF at jump one video was optional, but from jump 4-8 you had an outside camera flyer and it was included in the price. all footage was used to debrief and it was dumped to video raw. It helped me a great deal, particularly in what my mind was saying I was doing and what my body was really doing

I found it very helpful on the debriefs, for the same reasons you stated. Then if the video is not wanted it could just be deleted. Just seems to me that it would be good for not only learning but even safety reasons. And also documentation of a students progression.

Hell yes, it is a great debrief tool.
All the instructors at my DZ wear a cam - personally I don’t have a cam eye or sight so nothing distracts me from my responsibilities in the air with my student. Just a half rack with a d-box, nothing else. Plus it would suck if things got a little on the side of combat skydiving as is sometimes the case with students and I don’t want to get something to snagged on the student.
