Who likes night jumps?

Recommended Posts

Not really..... My first nightjump was a tandem at my own dz, with the TM screaming in my ear telling me the location of the airport, still couldn't see it. Totally disoriented and more than half night blind.

2nd jump, I was going to jump a student canopy for fear of not flaring but ended up using my spectre 135 because of the winds. Smart move, even so I ended up 10 km away of the DZ, blown backwards over my chosen landing filed at 1000 ft, and landing in the middle of nowhere with no clue as to where I was. Not all my fault, only 3 out of 10 jumpers landed anywhere NEAR the target, noone landed on the DZ itself. Or, my fault, as it was way too windy (the wind was supposed to let off not pick up that much! It never does.....)

Then the year after we were going again, i wanted to do a 3way BM jump, but soon it became a caravan full. Well since we couldn't even do a 16way by day (and half these BM didn't have any or many jumps at our DZ) why try it at night? :S No thanks. The jump was cancelled later anyway because of bad weather.

Haven't jumped at night since then...

I LOVE THEM! I took this shot Monday night. There was a near full moon -- but it was cooooold! 10 degrees!

ME! It feels "quiet" (I know, I'm mixing the senses around again). It's a more peaceful freefal....

Always liked them. Especially spotting for newbies who didn't have a clue where the airport was or which way we were flying. (they all landed on target)

The prettiest jump I've ever made was with a large moon in the fall. A ground fog was forming and filling all the low spots in the fields. The trees sticking up and the light shining off the fog made it look like something from Tolkien. Expected to see a dragon fly by. I opened at 6000' just to enjoy the view.

Night demos, looking at the lit football field in an area you not familiar with is always fun. Knowing if you don't land there your not sure where you'll land, or on what. Kind of like jumping down a tunnel with a light at the end. (Its the train!)

Of course I think I'd be pissed at the guy who just ruined my night vision with a flash!>:(:P

Hint for those reading this and thinking about their first night jump......

Data 1 - People at night sit around the Bonfire and it may look like fun to fly over it on the way to your landing -

Data 2 - Your canopy is made of nylon.

Data 3 - Bonfires put up sparks and updrafts

The rest is left as an exercise for the student.

I was thinking the same thing, but no one complained. They all wanted to go back up and make a second jump. I think they're all camera hogs. Or the flash and light in freefall didn't effect it very much. Now that shot I took of Mule on the way up in a little Cessna did take out his night vision for a few minutes. ;)

In that pic link I posted, Tom Sanders was filming some footage of me for his "Over The Edge" video...

With all the pyro etc., it's gets rather 'busy' doing those jumps.

Once I had everything lit and burning, I started my spin.

Into the second or third rotation...
Tom, who as always is in the right place at the right time...

Clicks on the pair of aircraft landing lights mounted on him to get the film footage he wanted.

Same level..50-60 feet away, I'm suddenly spotlighted!

I KNEW he gonna be there...Hell, we left the plane together!

Still...the first thought I had was...

OH FUCK......A I R P L A N E !!

Newbie question: is night blindness a major issue with night jumps?

depends on how urban the DZ is too. It can be pretty well lit when you're just off a city, and pretty black otherwise.

And for all the notions of planning night jumps around the moon, both times I did it the moon came up later in the evening after jump activities were completed.

Hint: The solution is to fly faster... Swoop the bonfire.... Whooosh!:P

Ah, the night jump stories I can tell. My favorite is being at a turbine DZ as a visitor, making night jumps, and having nearly five times the number of Night jumps as the S&TA or any other 'experienced' night jumper on the load.

I was not suprised to see one of the locals break his leg that night.[:/]

I loooove night jumps.

I've only done two... but my first night jump was on the first night jump load EVER done by a PAC750.

second one wasn't "technically" a night jump, but we couldn't even see the sun at altitude anymore. But it was a demo into a football field so it was at least lit up. However, they didn't tell us there would be another lit up football field about a mile away. We almost jumped into the wrong game :D Thank god for ground crew on radio, saying "You're on jump run? I only see one plane and its like a mile away!":D
