Mya728 0 #1 March 27, 2006 I'm looking to find out how long a person is usually in the air during a skydive. I understand the time certainly varies depending on how high you jump from, wind, your own weight, etc., but some ranges or averages of times would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! Samurai136 0 #2 March 27, 2006 First thousand feet of freefall take about 10 seconds to get to terminal velocity (120mph). There after it's about 6 second per thousand feet. If you get 10.5k for altitude and deploy about 3k that calculates to 50 seconds of freefall. Some aircraft drop jumpers closer to 13.5k which gets you about an extra20 seconds of freefall. I'm rounding numbers up for simplicity. If you fall faster you will spend less time in freefall."Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
packing_jarrett 0 #3 March 27, 2006 and then to add on there's the canopy decent wich varies on wieght, canopy size, and altitude you deployed your parachute. Usually a student will spend 5 minutes under canopy, novice 3 minutes, an experienced skydiver will tend to get down way faster.Na' Cho' Cheese
Mya728 0 #4 March 27, 2006 So the whole thing is just a matter of minutes, right? Say, somewhere between 3-10mins of time from the jump out of the plane, until you land on the ground?
WeakMindedFool 0 #5 March 27, 2006 I'm average 3 minutes from exit to landing. I leave my camera on the whole time then erase the canopy time unless something of interest happens. FlyinseivLP2 0 #6 March 27, 2006 If your talking about a first jump it will be a bit more canopy ride so more like 6-8 min total.
