Skydiving-- Time in air?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to find out how long a person is usually in the air during a skydive.

I understand the time certainly varies depending on how high you jump from, wind, your own weight, etc., but some ranges or averages of times would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

First thousand feet of freefall take about 10 seconds to get to terminal velocity (120mph). There after it's about 6 second per thousand feet.

If you get 10.5k for altitude and deploy about 3k that calculates to 50 seconds of freefall. Some aircraft drop jumpers closer to 13.5k which gets you about an extra20 seconds of freefall. I'm rounding numbers up for simplicity. If you fall faster you will spend less time in freefall.:)

I'm average 3 minutes from exit to landing. I leave my camera on the whole time then erase the canopy time unless something of interest happens. So I'm pretty sure on my time.
