Little Joe and Karen-

Thanks so much for that sampling. Look in the mail for some beer money dude! and thanks so much.

Karen, thanks for those tid bits of useful info, it was helpful.

and thanks all for positive advice.

I was just asking if some people had loops in my local area, that way I didnt have to ghetto rig something up for my trip through the airlines.
I ended up using some boot shoelaces.

I've seen people on here in the past complain about packers doing this, I think people should be thanking their packers for taking extra time to keep them safe.

But every time you tighten mine up, I can't get the damn thing closed when I pack it... my pack jobs aren't nearly as snug as yours. [:/]

why the hell does this thread change into something that it doesnt have to be? I just asked a simple question for some local fellow jumpers.

The reason "why didn't you change it" was brought up is that there's a lot of people out there with 99 jumps that don't know a damn thing about their gear, and they wanted to ensure you knew that letting a closing loop break was A Bad Thing.

Unfortunately, often leaving out important details to try and keep a thread short has the opposite effect. If you can demonstrate that there's a sensible reason why you've ended up in a situation, folk are less apt to try and lecture you :)
Good to hear it's all sorted.

that your closing loop should be as tight as possible.

not necessarily that tight.

i have seen more than a few main containers that had sharp edges on the last grommet, this was caused by the locking pin cutting into the grommet over and over. it becomes a definite snagpoint for main lines.

overtightening a rig can cause problems that are as bad or worse than the problems you were trying to prevent. i cannot recall any manufacturer stating a container(main or reserve) should be closed as tight as possible in writing.

pulling is cool. keep it in the skin

Then you need to loosen it back up when you pack it. I know it's a pain... but I promise you that I'm not sneakily shortening your closing loop to be mean.:P

It's cause I wub you.:)

I think that DZ's should liberally give out closing loops for FREE. At one DZ I used to jump at they charged a dollar for a new loop.

Paragear is charging $22.50 for a 100yd roll of type IIA (item W9680R). Assuming you can get about 6 loops per yd; the cost per loop is 4 cents. I give them away for free, too.

Of course the easy solution would have just been to tie the flaps shut with your pull up cord in a nice big bow...

Just make sure to UNDO any temporary rigging. This whole thread reminds me of the time one of our jumper/ pilots at Palatka gave himself a pc in tow. He rode his motorcycle to the dz, and with no gear bag, he used a bic ballpoint pen to lock the main container closed on his SST Racer, so it didn't deploy and yank him off his bike. Of course, we were loading when he arrived and he ran to the Beech 18, throwing on legstraps as he boarded. You can figure out he rest. He never removed the pen, and didn't get a gear check. That Strong Lopo reserve did certainly kick his ass when he opened slightly head down...at terminal...with his main pc waving uselessly behind him...Ahh the good old days.
So...just be sure to undo whatever field expedient closing technique you use.

I used to have a double-ended closing loop with different lengths from knot to loop. That might help your tug-of-war with Karen. It also doubles the lifespan of the loop. Just be careful how you stow it so there isn't a long looped end hanging out to catch on something. BTW I broke my first closing loop last year, it didn't even look that worn despite having a lot of jumps on it. Karen heard it break and gave me shit for it.:$ But she also gave me acouple new closing loops.:)
