Why can we just all get along?

Recommended Posts

Basically, we are looking at a skydiving rig and the fundamental design consists of 4 flaps and a pilot chute with only a handful of thing that can go wrong that has to be determined by a certain altitude in order to release the main and then utilize another set of flaps and a pilot chute.

Let’s face it, skydiving is simple and the solution we must make to correct problems is quite simple as well.

Question:
Why do so many choose to disagree through heated debate rather than harmoniously and collectively decide to keep it simple and look for the common fundamental bonds rather than focusing on infinitesimal differences of opinion? Why aren’t those of us who may or may not be correct in their analysis be more open to suggestion of simplicity rather than complicating the hell out of it and quarrel through usless debate?
Why complicate something so simple when so much is at steak?

Ummmmm, steak...

Why can we just all get along?

Contrary to polular belief, skydivers are nothing special.

We are just like everyone else on this rock.

Driven by biology, ego, fear, and selfishness with an almost immeasureably small
amount of empathy for our fellow humans.

Thats why. :|

Sorry; if you don't use an RSL you're going to die :o.

'Course, if you do use an RSL you're going to die too.:P

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

'cuz if you burn the steak you can go to Payless and pick up another...

If you burn in skydiving, you have to get your next BBQ supplies at the great pearly Payless in the clouds.

When there is so much more at steak than steak, people can get excited because others challenge what they feel makes them the safest.

I'm thinking about quitting online forums because of that anger you're talking about; I definately don't feel it at any DZ I've been to.

Especially about flaming the coach rating!

I just can't quit though, there's just too much downtime between classes!

Well said, Chris. This is a somewhat disturbing perspective on humanity, but also an accurate one I think. We must deal with what is, not what we would prefer things to be.

If I hit the genie in the bottle and could have one single wish, it would be that
we, as a species, would from this time forward, deeply feel the suffering
of our fellow beings. Human and otherwise.

Can you imagine how that would change the world?

Empathy. Thats it.

Sorry, I know this is now VERY far from the original topic ;)

Because life gets boring and a little debate is a lot more entertaining than just posting "what he said".

You right, it is simple:

There are 2 things that you must do on each skydive in order to survive. One is to deploy a landable canopy and two is the land that canopy safely. It does not matter how many points you turned or how long your swoop was. If you do not perform these 2 tasks it is safe to say you will not survive.

Welcome to the Internet. For most people, the only thing that helps it is time. I don't get nearly as bent about online discussions of any type as I did when I first got on the intarweb (my first USENET posts are within a year or so of being old enough to drive). People will carry on flame wars online over things they'd never argue about in person. After awhile you learn to separate the wheat from the chaff and to just go on to the next thread when the junk starts. Another thing that time does is allow people to meet other online people in real life. It starts to dawn on them that the little glowing letters were put there by another live human being, and it's harder to be mean to a live human being than it is to little glowing letters.

More importantly, why aren't whitewalls listed as an option???:S

Didn't WANT them, didn't ORDER them...but there they are on my new car,
and according to the sticker...I had to pay EXTRA for 'em!>:(
