Headdown tandem?

"Intentional back-to-earth or vertical orientations that cause tandem freefall speeds exceeding that of droguefall are prohibited."

By the way this is worded, you could argue that intentional flips on exit are prohibited.

Only prohibited if the speed of tandem droguefall is exceeded. One or two backloops are allowed under the BSR because excessive speeds are not achieved due to the sub-terminal exit, but a long series of backloops is not permitted. With that understood, consider the speed and control risks of multiple backloops. As has already been pointed out, a tailgate exit may naturally involve a loop (or two), but many DZO's don't like the process from conventional side door airplanes, and most manufacturers frown on aggressive loopers. It's may be fun for the instructor, but loops are pretty much missed by the student, and they add risk.

I'll get some heat for saying this, but...tandem instructors who are bored by standard tandems and feel the need to add excitement "for the student" should probably find another line of work.

so this thread is up for something like two days now and i'm starting to wonder about one thing:

the last thread where a "tandem-stunt" (the one about the tandem-hybrid, you know, too lazy to do a search and make it clicky) was discussed, almost everybody was bitchin about how unsafe that was. i quite don't understand why the same concerns aren't worded in this one :S
The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle

It doesn't say back to earth is ok if tandem terminal is not exceeded. It says back to earth OR vertical orientations.

I agree that a backloop off the tailgate is a quick and easy way to get out but its not the easiest or the safest. Backing out would be the quickest and most stable.

That wasn't the intent. When the regulation was adopted I thought your read of the BSR was correct, so at that point I checked with the Director of Safety and Training and a USPA Director involved in the decision. They all said that the intent was to eliminate multiple backloops, freestyle, and high speeds, not one or two backloops on exit. That doesn't mean everybody agrees that one or two backloops are alright, but just that the directors didn't want to impose a significant limitation on the member drop zones (that means tandem factories).

I am a thirteen year skydiver and a 9 year tandem instructor. I work at a small two cesna 182 dropzone and I have watched exits form everything you could image jumping from. My normal exit for my passenger is with both feet on the step facing the tail with me and my drouge protected still in the airplane. After one more handle check I do three front flips out of the door. I have the passenger yell the flips out to me so they are completely aware of the exit. We arch together on flip three, and I am completely stable at drouge pitch and my drouge is out before tandem treminal. I am insulted by the previous statement saying that I lack skill and knowledge. I personaly feel that I am the best tandem instructor out there. Without that attitude I would not be a tandem instructor. I am 100% dedicated to my passsenger and their safety as well as their experience and introduction into the skydiving sport. Obviously the original video is of two experienced skydivers. And as the warning says this is a dangerous sport. Don't make me wear a seatbelt just because you crashed into a telephone. I don't need laws just common sense.

I use to do two flips for the reason to gain speed for stability. The added speed helps to gain stability for drouge toss. I have stopped though due to this reason. With the passenger having both feet on the step it is easy for them to load their knees and pin you to the underside of the door and damanage the reserve pin dragging it across the door as you exit.

A diving exit with an arch works fine for me now, I bring my hands and arms out in front during this exit if your in a head low position due to the lack of speed, you will trim out quickly and toss the drouge.

One of my favourite videos is of a tandem. The guys of freefly euphoria taking a family member on a tandem and although tandem is belly to earth the guys are back flying and stuff docking with him. It looks awesome fun and the best introduction you could possibly have to skydiving. He enjoys it so much he does another one straight away!

Nice one guys B|
