WatchYourStep 0 #1 May 10, 2006 Well I'm headed up to Philadelphia tomorrow and will be there until Sunday morning. I may have some free time on Saturday to jump at Crosskeys. Do I take my rig or not? skydivingweather.com says this about the weather "Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Highs in the lower 60s." weather.com says this about the weather for Sat. "60% chance of rain, mainly cloudy and rainy" So do I deal with the possible hassle of taking my rig when the chance to jump isn't guaranteed. I am planning on making some sacrifices to the gods of Cross Keys weather tonite. The weekend is still several days away and its entirely possible the forecast could change.__ My mighty steed

selbbub78 0 #4 May 10, 2006 depends how much free time you have.... me, i'd think about just renting gear if you could only make a few jumps. is it worth bringing the whole rig, if you can't spend an entire day jumping? or if it rains and get no use out of it. I'd just bring my logbook, altimeter, helmet, etc.. :-) CReW SKies,"Women fake orgasms - men fake whole relationships" – Sharon Stone "The world is my dropzone" (wise crewdog quote) "The light dims, until full darkness pierces into the world."-KDM

ChrisL 2 #6 May 10, 2006 Actually, if you go for convienience and leave your gear at home, that will almost guarantee it will be nice out. That means I'll be able to jump. Leave your gear at home. __ My mighty steed
murps2000 86 #7 May 10, 2006 No-brainer, dude. It is axiomatic that if you are going to be near X-keys, you should bring your rig.
Eule 0 #8 May 11, 2006 QuoteDo I take my rig or not? Get it ready, then check the forecast as late as you can tomorrow before you have to go to the airport. Right now they don't know. The blurb from the NWS is "Saturday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high around 62. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible." When the forecast is shaky like this (say 30% to 70% rain chance), the nice thing about the NWS is that you can read the forecast discussion. Even though it is written in weatherman and not English, you can still get a feel for how much confidence there is in the forecast. The 10 May 16:46 discussion is at the end of the post; there's a lot of stuff in it, but I left it all in because the wording tends to show the uncertainties in the forecast. The shouting (all caps) is theirs. They twiddle the forecast continuously, but many (most?) NWS offices tend to issue completely revised forecasts around 0400 and 1600 local time, plus or minus an hour or so. Check the forecast and the discussion on Thursday morning and the picture should be clearer. Eule Quote.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... A PESKY WEATHER SITUATION THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. AFTER A FAIRLY LONG DRY PERIOD, WE ARE LOOKING ONCE AGAIN TO ENTER INTO A WET WEATHER PATTERN. AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE AND IT`S ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL BE MOVING ITS WAY INTO THE GREAT LAKES REGION TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING. THE FRONT WILL OCCLUDE AND SLOWLY MOVE ITS WAY NORTHWARD, WHILE A TRIPLE POINT LOW IS FORECAST TO FORM AND MOVE OVER EASTERN PA/WESTERN NJ. IF IT DOES THIS, THE SOUTHERN PARTS OF OUR CWA MAY ENTER INTO THE WARM SECTOR FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME ON FRIDAY. THIS TRIPLE POINT LOW WILL THEN SLOWLY MOVE ITS WAY OUT TO SEA ON SATURDAY, BEFORE THE NEXT LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES ITS WAY TOWARD THE AREA. TONIGHT SHOULD START OFF DRY AS SUBSIDENCE FROM THE LOW PRESSURE WEST OF US CONTINUES TO MOVE EASTWARD. AFTER MIDNIGHT, THERE MAY BE A CHANCE OF DRIZZLE/FOG BEFORE THE SHOWERS MOVE IN FROM THE WEST DURING THE DAY TOMORROW. THE RAIN WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE OVERNIGHT THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY MORNING AS THE FRONT PASSES THROUGH THE AREA. AS MENTIONED EARLIER, WE MAY BRIEFLY ENTER INTO THE WARM SECTOR DURING THE DAY...THOUGH WE WILL NOT GET EXTREMELY WARM...MID 60`S. WITH THIS COMBINED WITH A STRONG SHORT WAVE THAT IS FORECAST TO MOVE THOUGH THE AREA, WE HAVE INCLUDED A CHANCE OF THUNDER INTO THE FORECAST FOR EARLY FRIDAY MORNING TROUGH FRIDAY EVENING. THERE MAY BE A BRIEF BREAK IN THE ACTION EARLY SATURDAY, HOWEVER, THERE MAY BE ENOUGH INSTABILITY AND MOISTURE DURING THE DAY TO CREATE MORE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.PLF does not stand for Please Land on Face. DeNReN 0 #9 May 11, 2006 I'm with murps...its a "duh".....take your gear. I personally have missed plenty a jump over the past 7 years trying to read the forcast.....better to have your gear and miss jumping due to the weather than to not have your gear and have perfect weather ...the later is always a "doh"
Mockingbird 0 #10 May 11, 2006 The main thing I look at are winds, since it's rarely completely cloudy down here. And I ALWAYS depend on Accuweather.com, because it not only gives you the forecasted wind speed and direction, it also tells you what the GUSTS will be for the day. Very dependable weather site. See: http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast-detail.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=0&traveler=1&zipcode=08094&fday=4&metric=0 AccuWeather says a 25% chance of rain there on Sat. with east wind at 9 mph and wind gusts to 25 mph. GO FOR IT!!!!!!Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
WatchYourStep 0 #11 May 11, 2006 Yup I'm going to take it. If anyone is at CrossKeys on Saturday and sees a guy wearing a Kansas shirt stop and say hi. Also feel free to say, "Where not in Kansas anymore." because I don't hear that from every other person. "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience.
