World renowned simulation research of how parachutes open... Very interesting.

Flow Past a Paratrooper with an Open Parachute
In this simulation, a paratrooper/parachute system is modeled as a rigid body, and there is no relative motion between the paratrooper and the parachute. The paratrooper geometry is modeled after an average person. The parachute is modeled after a C-9 parachute, a typical personnel parachute used by the Army. The chute has a constructed diameter of 28 ft, and a line length of 23 ft. The rate of descent is 20 ft/s.

The C-9 is not a typical canopy used by the Army. It is used by the USAF and Navy in air crew systems and some ejection seats. An all up airborne jumper jumping a C-9 would have a decent rate closer to 35 + ft/s.:P
