DEDjed 0 #1 July 27, 2006 Hi, Whuffo here but only until i get some cash As i am looking to start up this sport ive been on an info finding mission for the past couple of weeks and last weekend ended up at the Farnborough international airshow (for those not familiar this is an annual event in farnborough, england ... just down the road from me.. where various aircraft are displayed (this year included the new airbus, a mig, the eurofighter, the osprey etc etc... oh and the red arrows ofc)) The reason i went to the airshow was because the RAF parachute display team was opening it (they did a low altitude exit on a static line and did some acrobatics, formed a stack and landed) and i figured i might be able to talk face to face with some skydivers however the closest i came to finding a skydiving 'stand' was the RAF parachute regiment recruitment tent I was wondering why skydiving wasn't better represented at this event (it is a major interational event), considering they had stands such as 'the aviation book club' and 'have your photo taken with darth vader/spider man'Blue skies and deep water
riggerrob 643 #2 July 30, 2006 ... because parachutes cost less than 1 percent of the cost of an Osprey. Farnborough, Paris, Dubai, etc. are for the "big boys" i.e. military purchasing officers who cheerfully lay down hundreds of millions of dollars for a dozen jets at a time. That could also be said about "have your photo taken with Spiderman", etc., booths which apparently were present. I guess BPA just didn't think it worthwhile. I don't recall seeing any skydiving related stands at Oshkosh last week either.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
