Got Hook-knife?

Recommended Posts

Okay... who here has actually used a hook-knife?... not just has one ... and I mean actually used one under canopy to deal with a malfunction or wrap... not as in used one to cut the odd piece of 550 from the spool to make a new closing loop... not as in used one to trim some unstylish looking loose thread from your jumpsuit on the way to altitude... not as in used one to gutt a bass... but no shit had to use one for its intended purpose?

----- Some entertaining hook-knife stores ------

1. An old CRW dog once told me the reason he carried two hook-knives is because when you need one, you pull the first one out and throw it away... cause you were going to drop it anyways... then you pull the second one out and go to work.

2. Once, while waiting to get on the plane at AV, I saw a guy who, since he had converted his rig to a BOC, had stowed one of those "Jack-the-Ripper" hook-knives in the old pilot chute pouch on his right leg strap. I was still a relative low timer then... and he was more "experienced"... I asked him if he ever was worried he'd reach back and grab his hook-knife in his old pilot chute pouch and "toss it" at pull time? He jokingly berated me about "son, I've got hundreds more jumps then you, have had it there for a long time, its been awhile since I went BOC... I'd never do something so silly!" Well... no shit... he did it on that very load... got to pull time, reached back to his old ROL pouch and tossed his "hook-knife-hacky-chute" ... ah, the power of suggestion... :D

Friend of mine used one on a jump a while back. He didn't stow it very well, and on opening it came out of its pocket, spun up into the canopy, cut three lines (we got it on video) and disappeared. He then cut away and landed safely under his reserve.

In retrospect we decided he must have been about to have a tension knot, and the hookknife was just doing its job . . .

Yep, long time ago on a line over on a T-10. Saved a cutaway and I got more pull up cords out of the deal. It didn't really need all those lines anyway.;)

I tried. Unfortunatly I was in a spin, my hookknife dropped to the ground, and I couldn't grab my other hook knife I had since i was wrapped up.

Just for the record...i do CRW and that's what happened to me. My first hook knife fell to the ground. It's a true statement. Those crwdogs know what they're talking about!

On the ride to altitude, an AFF instructor put his radio in his jumpsuit pocket and then the zipper broke. He borrowed my hook knife to cut open the pocket.

Also, on a sunset cross country jump one person put a can of... soda in his long sleeve shirt sleeve for the canopy descent and then couldn't get it out, so he cut open his shirt under canopy. :D
