Ten Years for Max C.

Recommended Posts

Got a laugh at the photos in SKYDIVING magazine of Max Cohn celebrating the tenth anniversary of his first jump at the Ranch, with his original instructors. According to the caption, he's wearing a student jumpsuit & helmet, but "chickened out" of using a student rig.

While I've not spend the bulk of my jump career at the Ranch, I do know they have a talented staff and good quality student gear. I'd jump any of their rigs without hesitation. Don't know why Max would be reluctant to trust this stuff.

The good news is that most of the people who will use this gear are probably not reading SKYDIVING yet, so this will not influence their confidence.

(Personal "hello" to Max: We met during my visit in 2002. You noticed my "Simpson's" cup and we discussed our enjoyment of the program.)

What really sucks is that, two months before he made his first jump, I had nearly 500. There was a brief moment in history where he would have looked up to me with awe.B|

Anyway, Congrats.

Cheers,
Jon S.

I highly doubt it had ANYTHING to do with "trusting" the student gear. I would imagine that, along with wearing all the other student gear, people dared him to jump a student rig too. Not because it would be dangerous, but because it would be funny to see him jump a big ol' rig and land a big student canopy. I am guessing that him "chickening out" is simply because he didn't want to fly a big student rig as opposed to his nice rig and canopy.

I think you are completely misreading the whole thing of "chickened out."

The line I found humorous was "...The cool part was that the weather broke just long enough for that one load..."

It hardly looks like the weather broke. It may be that someplace out of frame there is a hole, but honestly, is there any chance that they could see enough of the surrounding airspace to make sure they were not creating a hazard to air traffic?

So anyway, congrats to Max, Carol, and Gino. It's great that they are all still in the sport!

Tom, you know as well as anyone that all it took was a litttle divine intervention and voila! a Joe Hole. I believe compeltely that the weather broke long enough for one load. At the Ranch? All the time.

ps. how's the race?

thanks all, very kind of you to notice

1) yes, there was visual contact with the ground and surrounding airspace to check for traffic

2) i chose not to wear the student rig because the dive plan involved a hybrid (with me hanging/standing underneath) and i did not feel it was as safe to use a student rig to go upwards of 160-170mph as it would be to use my rig. The Ranch certainly has top and new (or newer) quality student gear.

i would have no problem flying the big canopy, no problem with getting a bruise or two, etc...

3) thanks again. i think it was quite cool to be jump like that w/ carol and gino again (gino cruised up from work all excited to jump, and he does not jump that often anymore, so i felt really special)

carol, on the otherhand, is a jump junkie!!! simply amazing. its like yeterday she did my level 1 ground course.

also, thanks to sonic for the great pics.

maybe i can get carol and gino to do it again for my 15th anniversary :-)

Yes! A big high-five to Carol. Had the pleasure of carpooling to Duanesburg several times from Long Island together, back when I had about 90 jumps and she had, oh, 150 one week, 230 a month later, etc. ;)

Nice people at ASC, including my first instructor Bob R. Damn shame I couldn't spend more time there.

Cheers,
Jon
