Power Lines??

You don't even have to touch high voltage lines to get a flash. If you get within 11 feet 3 inches it can jump and get you. That is why all lines that are high voltage are placed 14 feet from any ground source.

I'm 6'4" and have yet to be electrocuted walking under a power line. ;P

The 11 foot rule is for high voltage transmission lines (the ones on very tall towers). The medium voltage stuff you see running down the road will arc before lines actually touch, but they have to be within inches. If you look at the size of the insulators on the lines (those things holding the lines up that look like a stack of cups and saucers), you'll get an idea of how close the lines have to be before they'll arc.

That is why I said HIGH voltage. A person can energize themself and touch up to 750,000 volts without discomfort until you get grounded, then ZAP.

I agree with that conclusion, i have learned much more about power lines than i ever would without going skydiving. however it all seems a bit un-neccesary as if you were to land off DZ. by the time you see power lines in your path, you only have 2 choices - land in them or an evasive turn resulting heavy landing. i will certainly be studying arial photographs much more carefully at each new DZ i visit for possible outs..

Not true, power lines can be seen from much higher up. Here are some clues to their location. In the US the lower voltage ones (and telephone lines) often run along the edge of the road (not so true in Europe).

For other lines look for gaps that are straight lines running through trees, buildings etc. The chances are that the gap is there because something else is sitting in there. In open fields they are a bugger to see. Your best bet is to try and see the shadow of the support pole or clumps of uncut grass or corn (which are often a different colour), these will also lie in a straight line.

Basically if you see straight lines it's man-made and therefore a potential hazard to probably avoid. It takes a while to train your eye to see these things, but once you get your eye in it's often quite easy.

Its true that you can't see the lines. But you can see the clues such as in the post above.

I personally find that the most clear way to see them is to look for the poles. (in combination with avoiding borders)

If you can't see power lines (or the obvious clues that they are there) until it's too late, maybe you need glasses. My 59 year old eyes have no difficulty picking up power lines from 1000'.
