It depends on your height.

I believe that 254 is the very extreme of what containers are TSO'd to handle.

Some people did do AFF @ 250lbs though. Search as this has been asked before.

I've been wanting to try skydivng for some time but I can not find a place that will allow me to. this do my weight being over limits.

if anyone knows where person can learn when they weigh a lot I'd like to know too.

i'm curently a physicly fit 254lbs.

The gear has limits beyond which it is illegal to jump. Few people will risk being sued if you hurt yourself jumping gear beyond those limits. Although you sign a waiver, they still have to pay lawyers if you sue, and the right to sue for gross negligence cannot be waived.

Most older gear is certified under Technical Standard Order (TSO) C23B for a maximum suspended weight of 254 pounds. 254 pounds - 30 pounds of gear = 224 pounds maximum user weight.

Some newer gear is certified to higher weights (I have two harness/containers certified to 275 pounds, and a few companies offer gear good for 300 pounds). Tandem rigs have been adapted for single students. Look harder and you'll find a dropzone which such equipment and is willing to accomodate you although you may have to travel if you live in an area where the student business is not lucrative enough to justify purchasing newer gear.

I've heard of DZ's in Florida that use a modified tandem rig for students that are physically fit, but over 'average' weights.
Maybe do a bit of research and find such a place.

I knew a guy who did just that. He had an exit weight around 300. He was 7 feet tall.

Older TSO's required all tests to be designed to handle exactly 254 pounds max. The latest TSO's offer the mfgr the option of designing and testing gear to the limits they choose. Note the weight limits at the high and low ends of the Maximum Weight Limit Column on this page:

You may be able to find a drop zone that will allow you to start the AFF student program without a tandem jump. They would have to work with you to help you find suitable gear and it may be your responsibility to purchase it for yourself, (depending on what type of student gear the dz has). That would be a lot of work and quite an expense, but one you would take on if you plan to be a licensed skydiver anyway. Not the easiest option but worth checking in to.

what area are you from. we can handle big boys here in georgia. AFF and tandem.

actually I'm in Edmonton alberta Canada, I don't mind traveling but georgia is getting bit far for me. map quest says its only a 2500mile drive.

anyways I think I may have found a place, not too far from where i live, eden north skydivng. 230lb max, some exeptions allowed.
I think I can loos that 15 lbs...im in shape, but could be in better shape. just have to give up beer for a while.

the guy who runs the place is a skyhawks training adviser (candian military skydiving show team)... so Im likely in good hands there.

I skydive at Skydive Twin Cities (Baldwin, WI). They modified a tandem rig for a larger gentlemen here. If you are interested in becoming a skydiver then talk to your DZO about this option (if it is a smaller DZ they may accomodate you).
