nabal 0 #1 August 28, 2004 New to sport and havent made my jump yet(still saving up)still might be awhile as I have 4 kids and money is always tight.Question is should I tandem first just to make sure I like it or should I buy a Static line package that has a couple of jumps in it but no freefall.I just dont want to spend for the tandem when that will get me more jumps with the static.Would love to go aff but again money is a problem. Thanks for info. nabalIf guns kill ,then spoons made Rosey O'Donnel fat
PhreeZone 20 #2 August 28, 2004 If money is going to be really tight and you are dead set on the sport, then the Static line progression is going to be your better bet. It's a slower progression, but the jumps are cheaper per jump. Currency is the name of the game in jumping. The more current you are, the easier it is to fly most people find out. Plus there are currency requirements as a student to progress you need to make at least 1 jump every 30 days at most DZ's. If you can do 2 jumps in a day you'll find it much easier to learn muscle memory and that makes you a better jumper. Plus more currency helps you remember things like flare heigth, flight patterns and your malfunctions. Something you really need to think about if money is really that tight is if you are going to be able to afford to stay current in the future. Gear rental is $30-50 at most DZ's after you graduate from your student progression. Some DZ's require you to pay for coaching also so thats an added expenece. After graduation most people buy their own rig and thats typicallly $2000-4000 for a used rig. This is not a cheap sport and if you don't have the cash laying around to do it safely you might want to think about waiting till the spring and saving up cash over the winter. This will let you keep current easier (its damn cold jumping in Ohio in the winter), it will let you have the cash to do 2-3 jumps per trip to the DZ and you can start to have a savings fund your your rig going. crotalus01 0 #3 August 30, 2004 my DZ doesnt have static line progression, so we are required to do a tandem before AFF groundschool and the first AFF jump. from my understanding static line is cheaper, but for me its all about the freefall...if you want to be under a canopy you could do parasailing to see what its like, its a hell of a lot cheaper. but freefall is an experience unto itself. i would do a tandem, lay off for the winter and save money. THEN do AFF if you liked the tandem... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
