RB_Hammer 0 #1 November 27, 2006 Did my first AFF jump Sunday, 11-26-2006. Due to not having 2 AFF instructors available when I did my First Jump Course, I did that on Saturday. Was a lot to learn and remember, but I think I am glad I had the night to think about it all and practice. Was pretty shaky in the training harness on Saturday after the class stuff, but in the harness on Sunday, not a problem! Did some review and 20 questions then got geared up and boarded. During the ride up, tried to relax and run through all of the things I needed to do and the things I may have to do in case of a mal. At 14K, got in the door and did the check-in and check-out, then up, down out. YES!!! I remembered to arch. They told me the total time in freefall was 60 seconds, but I know it was only 15. Did 3 practice pulls and extended legs 3 times after signaled. I was really proud of myself when I saw how many times I looked at my altimeter in the video. I did my pull and had a fantastic ride down on the Navigator 230. Did not get a stand-up landing, but it was a gentle sit-down. Have to wait 2 weeks to jump again. Never thought I would hate the holiday season, but if not for the holidays, I would be jumping again this weekend. Can not wait to do my next jumps. Blue Skys always"I'm not lost. RB_Hammer 0 #3 November 27, 2006 Thanks Bill. Funny, waited 51 years to do my first skydive and now I can't stand the thought of waiting 2 weeks to do my next. My bike, a smokey gold and vivid black 2004 HD Ultra-Classic, for those that did not see him, is named MAX. First scooter I have ever named in 41+ years of always riding and owning at least 1. Anyway, he is going to be the only thing that will get me through the next 14 days... HUGE thanks to everyone at Desert Skydiving in Buckeye, AZ for the first class training and the obvious care and attention to everything that made that first jump a success."I'm not lost. drudchen 0 #4 November 27, 2006 QuoteThey told me the total time in freefall was 60 seconds, but I know it was only 15. Actually, I feel the opposite way, more like a time expansion. In freefall it always feels as if I have all the time in the world. Having started with a static line progression, the first 5 second delay seemed to be lasting forever When you have a lot of maneuvers and tasks to accomplish it, to me, it seems as if i have a lot more time than what the actual delay is. popsjumper 2 #5 November 27, 2006 Good stuff, Rick! 51? Geez...have you joined POPS yet? Sounds like you got good training and I'm all about that. The idea of giving students some time to absorb what they learn in FJC is a really good one, in my book. I wish all DZs and new jumpers could afford to do that.My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. chaosreins 0 #6 November 27, 2006 when i finished my aff ground training a couple of months ago, i was really nervous about going for that first jump (i had 2 tandems under my belt but they were years ago). turns out the winds had picked up during the afternoon and my instructor decided it wasn't safe to go up, so i waited until the following weekend. i'm really glad i had the extra time, just to review everything i needed to do in freefall, and to mentally prepare myself for the jump. i should add that the day i went for ground training, i had *no* clue what was in store for me. it was my birthday and all i was told was "dress comfortably and in layers". it wasn't until the car turned into the dz that i realized what was happening! so i guess i did need that extra time to mentally get myself ready. RB_Hammer 0 #7 November 27, 2006 QuoteGood stuff, Rick! 51? Geez...have you joined POPS yet? Had no idea there was an organization for us elderly, broken down old farts that think we can be jumpers. I think I'll wait a least until I get my A license. Maybe I should join AARP first... "I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late."
