Garmin GPSMAP96C

Recommended Posts

Just did a software upgrade online and it add in the main menu "Jumpmaster".
Information input is exit altitude, opening altitude, landing area location, winds every 1000 ft and then it calculates the "HARP" which I think means high altitude release point. It then makes HARP a waypoint.
I contacted Garmin to see if there was any documentation for this feature but they haven't got back to me yet.The guy I talked with said they do that sometimes(adding a feature) and the documentation lags behind.I don't know if it would be included with other Garmin model updates but it might.
Haven't had a chance to try it on a jump yet,but it looks interesting.

If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.

I have a 96C and it takes a long time to acquire satellites (my 396 is about 10 times faster). If this is typical, it may be a problem getting acquisition in the jump plane.

Look again on the Garmin website as documentation does exist for the jumpmaster feature. However, unless you're a Military jumper that feature offers zero benefit to skydivers. However, if you can convince your pilot to fly so that you release(exit) over the HARP you will make it back to the DZ. The safety factor and the K factor that is the default is set up for the MC-4 HALO chute so anyone under a tandem canopy and smaller should make it back no problem. Chances are your DZ has a flight pattern it already flies depending on where the winds are from. Typically skydivers and the pilots who fly them don't like it when they do anything other than fly and release in the vicinity of the DZ. A HARP can put you miles away from the DIP(Desired Impact Point) depending on the winds. If you are interested in more on this topic do a search for "do bad spots really exist" and look for the Power point presentations and explanation I posted on how to do what the Jumpmaster feature does yourself.

Interestingly enough, once the HARP is known, the jumpmaster will usually associate a feature on the ground that is directly below the HARP and that is what is known as "the spot", unlike in skydiving where if you were to ask someone what the "the spot" was on any given day they either cannot tell you or they give you something along the lines of " X tenths past the peas" and they usually don't associate a terrain feature with that. The Jumpmaster will actually look for the spot on the ground from the door/ramp of the aircraft, give the pilot heading corrections and when the A/C is directly over it he will give the command to exit the aircraft. This is what the term "spotting" really refers to. I have never seen a civilian DZ calculate the winds and fly the jump run using the military method for skydivers or actually spot using a terrain feature obtained from said calculations, it's usually SWAG and just being familiar with the DZ.

Yea the documentation does exist , I found out in a pm from Hooknswoop.I just recently acquired a 182 and plan on using it for demos and some non dz jumps and it looks like it could be a good tool.

Then definately look at the powerpoint presentations I mentioned as you need to understand what it is the Jumpmaster feature is doing for you and it's limitations. This is really important if you are doing demos and you plan on using this feature. HAHO= hop and pop/CRW ;HALO= freefall/skydive. If you have any questions feel free to PM me:)
