I recently had a tandem in october. like everyone else says i had a blast. free fall felt awesome in a way that there was really no feeling at least when i started to breathe;). the canopy opening felt like nothing and still wasnt bothered by anything until the tandem instructor pulled a couple 360s hard. he didnt tell me he was going to do this and caught me off gaurd. i felt very quesy (spelling). i used to get car sick when we would drive on curvie roads, but when got my license i could take those turns faster than the speed limit and no sickness. when i pilot my own canopy is it possible it will be the same reaction, no sickness? i feel if i can control where my body goes at that very moment, ie hard turns, i wont get air sick. has this happend to anyone else?

You are 100% normal.

I know many tandem instructors who keep "barf bags" - but I don't know of any experienced skydivers who do... The reason is - between uncomfortable straps on tandems and lack of being in control... Well, you know... Being in control of the canopy makes a huge difference. (You don't have to spiral down if you don't want to either)....

The car analogy is true... The passengers normally get sick before the driver.

tdog -

I have never done a tandem -

Does not being under the center of the canopy make a difference?

I only have done two tandems (on the front side, one as a newbie, one as an experienced skydiver) and zero as the TI - but I jump at a DZ where my friends/fellow instructors do 100-200 tandems a weekend as a team, so I learned a lot from them... I think that not being in control, not knowing what to expect, has more to do with it, than the center point...

However, you bring a good point, not so much the student being not directly under the canopy, but where they are relative to the lines and the CG as it swings out... I mean, we as experienced skydivers can easily change where we are in the "window" of the canopy during a turn - by pulling both brakes hard before a turn we are forward of center, for an example... That does not make me sick... But the student is father forward...

Anyone with more direct TI work wish to share???

I almost puked all over my TI on my first canopy ride down. Same thing, he went into a couple of 360's and almost lost my lunch. I have never experienced any type of motion sickness before this. I was concerned, going into AFP, about this being a problem, but it has not happened since. I was told that it was normal, and not to worry about blowing chunks. I have more important things to concentrate on.
See ya in a minute. Peace out!
