freeflyfairy 0 #1 September 13, 2004 i have a very close friend who is advancing rather quickly in the sport . he's exceptionally good, but still a novice with just over 50 jumps. he is taking things at a reasonable pace, but i still get really scared whenever he tries something new because he means a lot to me. the dzo and jumpmasters at our dropzone work closely with him, so i really have no reason to be nervous. also, the more i learn about what he's doing, the less scared i get, but I can't help it, though! do you guys have any suggestions on how i can deal with this anxiety? mattjw916 2 #2 September 13, 2004 "tries something new"??? What is he trying to do that is making you so worried??? Swooping an x-braced 2.2 w/l canopy at 50 jumps??? I do something "new" every weekend, that is what it is like to be a newbie skydiver. Unless he is out there trying to land Mr. Bills or something I really think you are over-dramatizing the situation.NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
goose491 0 #3 September 13, 2004 Sure good of you to worry about a friend but remember you are both new in the sport. Each and everything you both do right now should be "new". Now don't forget that as tight-knit a community this is, the sport is still very individualistic. Never compare your progression to a friends is a good rule of thumb for example. Try not to worry so much. Have this friend explain to you all the new things he's learning as he does so. Knowlege dispells fear. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! freeflyfairy 0 #4 September 22, 2004 he's not doing stupid new things...just landings that might be a bit more complicated than others can do at his level. maybe you're right...but i'm always going to worry a lil bit about anyone that's in the sky until they're safely back on the ground. doesn't mean i don't love the sport or the thrill of it all; i'm just aware of the possible outcomes. freeflyfairy 0 #5 September 22, 2004 thanks for your good advice. sometimes, with all the information available/needed to know abotu skydiving, it gets a bit overwhelming. but i'm trying to learn as much as possible. our dz has had a jumpmaster have a pretty rough landing (broken femurs) recently. i think that's where all this worrying came from. But i do realize that there's nothing i can do, so i'm just going to learn to trust him. and figure out just what it is that that skybum is doing:):) When the people look like ants -- Pull. somethinelse 0 #7 September 27, 2004 Hi "Ry", It's "Li". "Ky" is ok. He's always talking and learning from the experienced jumpers and has an afinity for this sport. I've asked the instructors about some of his manuevers, and have been told, that he is doing ok. Believe me, if he WAS doing something "scary" they'd be right on top of it. Our DZ does an admirable job of keeping an eye on the low#jumpers, and newbies, and what we're up to and how we're doing it. Ky comes off like quite the risk taker...And although maybe just a bit overconfident, he IS a safe jumper. I'll be out this coming Saturday afternoon...why don't you come on out and jump?!? I think we should all shorten our nickname to our first initial and the "i" sound...there's already: Guy, Sy, Ky, Ry, and I'm Li. It'd make for really funny conversations! We were joking about it yesterday at the dz. Blues! LiLa.
