LouDiamond 1 #2 March 1, 2007 That looks like it will work. Only thing I would recommend is to cover the exposed parts on the outside of the frap hat with gaffers tape, to include the antenna itself, when you decide to use it."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
Foggy 0 #3 March 1, 2007 Nice. Looks like your frap hat now offers about 10% more protection to its contents than before the mod Foggy D21109

I was very "snag" conscious when I did this. Gaffer tape over the antenna will render it useless, though. The grommet is seated well and not a problem. I'll have to keep it in the cockpit to maintain the signal before jumping. I'll probably make an inside pocket on my jumpsuit for the unit. The magnetic attachment is pretty secure. LouDiamond 1 #5 March 1, 2007 QuoteGaffer tape over the antenna will render it useless, though. I've used gaffers tape over the antennas I personally use and the ones we use at work with no ill effect to the receiver's ability to work properly, YMMV. QuoteI'll probably make an inside pocket on my jumpsuit for the unit. In the mean time you can also use a fanny pack under your jumpsuit to hold it all neatly together."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

openingshok 0 #11 March 2, 2007 HMMM. I work for Garmin and I never thought I would see one of our antennas mounted like that. Looks good. However, it will take a little bit for the unit to re-aquire the satellites from the time spent in the plane, unless you are in a Cessna and have the back to dash slot, then you could maintain signal through the windscreen. I'll either sit by the door (Otter) or put the hat and unit up on the "dash" of the plane before jumping. It gets a signal quicker with only a short delay in loss. See if Garmin is interested in this kind of "use" to promote the products.... I'll be the talent in the future commercial.... Russell M. LouDiamond 1 #13 March 2, 2007 QuoteSee if Garmin is interested in this kind of "use" to promote the products I approached Garmin about this 2 1/2 years ago with a business presentation on the sport of skydiving to see if it would generate interest. Once they found out how many active skydivers there are, they said they were not interested in pursuing this market. Eule 0 #19 March 4, 2007 QuoteI was very "snag" conscious when I did this. Is the bundle of "extra" antenna cable inside the heat-shrink going under your jumpsuit? I figure it probably is, but if not, I wonder if some tape around the ends would help. Right now there's something of a snag place where you go from the bare cable to the big bulk of the heat-shrink. QuoteGaffer tape over the antenna will render it useless, though. FWIW, I've used GPS antennas inside vehicles (on the dash or rear parcel shelf) that had velcro and electrical tape on top of them, and they worked just fine. It'd be simple to tell... just bring up the signal strength/satellites in view page that many GPS receivers have and see if the signal gets worse when you put the tape on the antenna. QuoteThe magnetic attachment is pretty secure. The ones on my van don't budge. Does your van go 120 mph? :) EulePLF does not stand for Please Land on Face. Eule 0 #20 March 4, 2007 QuoteOnce [Garmin] found out how many active skydivers there are, they said they were not interested in pursuing this market. There are "only" about 400,000 aircraft with N-numbers - that's Piper Cubs all the way up to 777s - and they go after that market pretty heavily. On the other hand, you don't see too many ads saying "Complete Rig $5,500! Add a Cypres for only $1,000 more or a full G1000 panel for only $100,000 more!" efs4ever 3 #21 March 4, 2007 The bundle of heat shrink tape wrapped wires was tube stowed to the unit, and the whole thing was in a fanny pack in front and under my suit. Even the 218 pounder sitting in my lap didn't push the off button. I used the device for the "first" time yesterday. It stayed put. and here are a couple of graphics of three of my four tandems at Skydive Houston. They are overlayed on Mapsource maps.Russell M.
