cvfd1399 0 #1 October 3, 2004 This weekend on 2 jumps a 8 way hybrid, and a 6 way speed belly/freefly jump a person got over the formation, lost air and crashed into the person below them. The first jump the guy came in from behind and above me trying to make a leg dock, and he over shot and crashed on my back from about 3 feet above me. The 4 way base was strong enough and did not get busted up. On the second jump another person came in crashed down on someones grip turned the base upside down and that was the end of that. The 2 jumpers in question are 500+ jumpers most freefly tho. And they were on their bellies trying to get grips to go into a stand for the hybrid. PhreeZone 20 #2 October 3, 2004 Depending on the fall rate of the base, it can be quite hard to fly in for those grips. That being said its not that unusual to be sucked into the base if you fly through their burbles. Its a skill to be able to fly in and take docks, its harder when you are flying at your limits to fly with a formation.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
cvfd1399 0 #3 October 3, 2004 Yea he was told afterwards by the more experienced of the group that the best thing to do is backtrack if you find yourself over someone when overshooting the formation, and most of the time you can slip back before you loose your air and fall on them
PhreeZone 20 #4 October 4, 2004 Backslide not backtrack. Getting above formations happens. Camera flyers deal with it all the time and they sometimes end up joining the skydive even though they were'nt part of it. But it does bring up an issue of lack of basic RW skills that people that go right to freeflying seem to have. It takes doing RW to fly to docks and take them smoothly and cleanly, you can't learn that still in a sit or HD, it takes being on your belly. Get caught in a burble and short of camera wings I've never been able to excape yet Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
mouth 0 #5 October 4, 2004 We did a BFR yesterday with mostly freefliers. OMG, it was amazing to look at the videos because so many of them were so flat on their bellies just because their normal jump position is not arched. I think it is good to be able to do a little of it all just to stay safe. Just remember if you are over the formation backsliding will help also think BIG as you slide back. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. crzjp20 0 #6 October 5, 2004 ifit makes you feel better, last jump i was one it was a 6 way with 4 D lisence two of which were... well old d loisence with about 4000 jumps each... anways, me and another low jumper gt invided into the formation and were in the base, so we had 5 out of 6 people and next thing i know i get slamed on my back and then the whole formation goes to hell with no time to recover ( exit from 9k) and who busted the formation? The freaking guy with 4000 jumps! ....and they were worried about the 2 newbies lol-------------------------------------------------- Fear is not a confession of weakness, it is an oportunity for courage. cvfd1399 0 #7 October 6, 2004 Yea I am just venting after being the "bombing target" all weekend. The jump was fun as hell anyways, as long as it doesn't hurt or cause me to have a premie ooh well it comes with the game.
Cacophony 0 #8 October 6, 2004 QuoteGetting above formations happens. Camera flyers deal with it all the time and they sometimes end up joining the skydive even though they were'nt part of it. Yep. I even use the burble to help stay close to a formation when I'm shooting 4 way video. I don't recommend it unless you know how the team flies and have experimented with it a lot! Trying to dock on a freefly formation is hard. When you throw belly fliers in the mix it makes it even harder. Normally on freefly jumps, in a vertical position there isn't much of a burble due to the orientation of flight. So when you put belly fliers in there its a whole different ball game. You have to be more accurate which takes some time getting used to. Perhaps the person or persons in question should get in some more practice before they attempt to dock on a hybrid again.
