How do you choose which DZ to visit?

Recommended Posts

Please think about this for a moment before responding. Over the last few years, what has made you go to a particular dropzone other than your own for a weekend (not team training).

I've left the poll as a single option but I'd like responders to post their list of these in order.

I theorize that 1st will be Event Weekend because most jumpers are home-bodies, but I'm curious about the rest.

Now really think about where you went last year and why you went there.

I picked "Event Weekend" but if I'd been able to pick two it would have been that combined with exposure/discussion on dropzone.com.

I've walked into DZs not knowing anyone and ended up having a fine time, but I can actually be kind of shy and reserved walking into that situation at first (no one ever believes me when I say that, but it's true) and I would much rather have some familiar faces when I visit a DZ for the first time. As I've been fortunate to meet a lot of people who frequent dropzone.com, that's often where I come to find out who's going to be where, and often plan accordingly.

Since I travel for work and can easily stay a weekend or fly somewhere other than home for a weekend, geography also comes into play in narrowing down the list.

So far I've been to 20 DZs in less than 3 years in the sport. It's been a blast. :)
Edit to add that exposure in parachutist and/or what's on the web are pretty much non-factors for me.

Yeah, I guessed that exposure in Parachutist and Skydiving would be the lowest ranking option. Most of the DZ's you see there are already spoken about more prominently elsewhere.

I have gone to some dz's just cause I got a wild hair, no boogie, no real reason to pick them, some had turbines, some only a cessna....most were uspa, some were not, some were kicking loads out at a frantic pace, some were more laid back... and have had a damn fine time most of these trips even though they were not the happening place.... The people make the experience in my opinion.

The one time I made a trip specifically for the purpose, it was to go to a boogie (Couch Freaks, Fort Dodge). Twice I was actually going to the tunnel and ended up visiting the adjacent (SDAZ, Eloy) or nearby (SD Carolina, Chester) DZ just to check it out. Once I was going to the lake for a holiday weekend with some non-jumping buddies, but stopped in at a DZ on the way (Freefall Express, Mt. Vernon) because it was there.

Second reason is by invitation from those whose acquaintance/friendship I have made in my travels.

Third reason is to support DZOs that I know and respect.

Completely true. I should probably edit the "happening place" to say what I really mean, that you know you'll have a good time with the people because they're open and social.

Plenty of loads, Good price, first in first served (not tandem priority) manifest, (multiple )turbine aircraft, bunkhouse, friendly to all disciplines = can participate in all disciplines with out wierd looks! and a great bonfire and people,

My favorite so far is Stockholms Parachute club, Sweden.

2 twin turbines (AN28 and twin otter), free bunkhouse, good food , good people, cheaper (than anywhere else in northern Europe anyway) jump tickets, good food and shit loads of skydiving!

tandems are the small minority there!
