slotperfect 7 #1 March 17, 2007 You never know what you're gonna get! About three weeks ago one of my wife's real estate clients emailed me and asked me for a tandem appointment. We set it all up, then he told me that it was really for his girlfriend who was flying into town for the weekend, and that he planned to propose marriage to her as part of the jump. So, they arrived this morning - she was clueless where they were going - and we set up the jump with two camera flyers. The "lord of the ring" stayed on the ground while I took his unsuspecting fiancee-to-be up for a tandem. The jump was excellent - she had a blast! It was perfect with her mouthing "I love you" to her soul mate on the video. After we landed I took her harness and helmet off and he popped the question. She said yes, and we all lived happily ever after. I really love this job! Arrive Safely John
diablopilot 2 #2 March 17, 2007 I've been a part of a few proposals/weddings. They are a blast! One of the best was last year. I got the "bride to be", and the groom had arranged for an enormous sign to be laid out in the landing area after we took off. I spent most of the canopy time keeping us pointed away from the landing area and when I did turn in at around 1000agl, she notice the tarp and asked what it was. I said I didn't know. A few moments later she says "There are words on it." I asked what is said pretending to be distracted with flying the parachute. She started to read it to me, and halfway through she got real quiet and I could feel her start shaking. I swooped across the sign, landed her standing in front of the groom (on his knee) and the family and disconnected the harness fast. Good thing I did as she practically tacked him with a giant hug! Makes a fun time just that much better!---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
rhys 0 #3 March 17, 2007 I did a Tandem during the New Zealand Nationals last year with the groom. The priest was in the plane and they said their vows on the way to altitude and then we jumped them. I thought it was kinda weird with their family on the ground missing the whole show, it was fun though. They got a kick ass video so all was not lost for the family. The Bride had an all white jumpsuit made by 'deepseed' jumpsuits that are based in Taupo. I wonder if the poor jumpsuit will ever get another jump?"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
tombuch 0 #4 March 17, 2007 My favorite was a guy who brought his girlfriend for a tandem. They were both geared up and trained, and the guy was assigned to me. Another instructor had the girl. Just as we were walking to the plane I announced I had forgotten my goggles, and went back to get them, bringing the guy with me. He quickly got into a tuxedo under his jumpsuit and we went back out to meet the plane. The jump was pretty uneventful, but as privately planned, I opened significantly lower than the girlfriend so we would land first. As soon as our feet touched the ground the guy got out of the jumpsuit, and then the other instructor landed right in front of us. As the girls feet were touching down the guy got on one knee, held out the ring, and made his proposal. It was super cool to watch. The girl was way overloaded by the jump and had no idea what was going on. She was blank faced for a few seconds trying to figure out why her boyfriend was in a tuxedo, and trying to comprehend his words. Finally she put it all together, said yes, and they both cried and hugged, and hopefully lived happily ever after. I think that was one of those milk chocolate squares with soft caramel inside. DSE 5 #5 March 18, 2007 We had a newbie skydiver print out a huge banner asking his fiancee if she'd marry him. She went up with TM while he waited on the ground and laid out the banner. Similar situation, he was on one knee when they landed. Unfortunately, she thought something was wrong because she could see him on a knee as they were landing. After she chewed him out for scaring her, she said "yes." I guess she missed reading the 30 foot banner that was laid out in front of him. It was a great experience being part of it.
